Hey Doc, I've been using the mid grade TungSols 5881's in my JAZ and love what they do for that amp. Any harm in giving a pair of 5881's a try in the Z-Plus?
Thx for the amp. It's outstanding!

While you're at it, how about other ocatal tubes, EL-34, 6L6, 6CA7, etc.? We just can't let well enough alone, can we?

You can put a 12AT7 in V1. Sounds cleaner at higher volume levels. I liked the 12AT7 but I prefer the 12AX7 in V1.

I've never cared for a 12AT7 for any role but either a phase inverter or a reverb driver. The 5751 or 12AY7 sound way better in V1 (to my ears anyway). The 12AT7 doesn't seem to generate the harmonics and spank that the other 12A*** types do.
Nicholas, Doc recommended the exact tubes you're talking about as a sub for JJ6V6's in the Z-Lux. I tried a quad of them for a few months a year or two ago, and they are more Fendery, more midrange push than the 6V6s were. I liked them but ended up going back to the stock tubes. Doc really knows how to voice an amp and every time I've tried other tubes than what he recommends I end up going back to the originals. The 5881s are a good alternative tone though, and I'm surprised that more guys haven't commented on this thread. There's a pretty good following of them here.
