It’s been a week now and I’ve got about 20+ hours on this amp now so the speaker is breaking in nicely. That said, the speaker(Z12) sounded beautiful right from the get go and should only get even better as it breaks in. I started out plugged straight in with my: R8(Antiquities), Strat(Stock CS), Hotrod ’52 Tele(Stock) and a LP Jr Sp(Antiquities). First thing is the chime, clarity and feel. IMHO, this amp with a strat is one of the most beautiful things heard, played and felt even with my crappy playing. Now it sounded good with all 4 guitars, but it seemed to really come to life with my Strat and R8. I LOVED the breakup with the R8, Volume maxed, Hi input, cut rolled back to about 9, T(2)M(9)B(11), Reverb and MV to taste. My od pedals didn’t have anything on this tone and feel with the exception of an old Lizard Leg clean boost to goose the front end. Did I say that I loved that tone and feel? LOL
7 Watts of class A is loud….and perfect….as is 15 for some more headroom.
I’ve got a very simple delay(MP Deep Blue) that has always sounded very good into the front end of amps, but sounded even better into the loop. The reverb is lush and perfect, enough said.
I’ve got a quite a few different od and fuzz pedals that I ran into the amp and they were all different and pleasant, but I ended up preferring the amp’s tone and breakup more for the most part for what I was trying to play. Here’s what I ran into it: AM Sunlion, Supafuzz(Farmland FX), Boiling Point, Timmy, Zendrive, Lizard Leg Flying Dragon, Skreddy Lunar Mod, Catalinbread RAH, and a JHS Superbolt. All great pedals in their own right, but I really loved just the amp.
I tried the amp into a couple of other cabs(Blue/G12H30) and Greenback. While they sounded good, Doc really paired it very well with the Z12 and I personally preferred it with that over the other 2. It was simply more “lively”. I hate to use that word, but there was more presence and even a slight volume increase over the other 2 cabs I assume due to being a more efficient speaker.
It’s been far too long not having a Z and I’ve got to say that after extensively playing the Z Wreck, Prescription Jr, NR Maz Jr, Remedy, EZG, this is my new favorite beating out my old NR Maz combo.
Thank you Doc for building a wonderful amp!
