Hello, new member here. I have a Maz 8 combo that has a slight hum, but only in triode mode. When I switch to Pentode, it is silent. The hum in triode is constant, with or without a cable plugged in, volume up or down. Maybe this is normal? Any ideas? Thanks!

If you have an extra EL84 trade out the existing one and see if it make a difference. After that try changing out the preamp tubes one by one to try to keep the hum isolated to one tube.
Welcome to the forum as well as having a great amp!

Hi dave78, welcome to the Z forum. Did you get your Maz 8 new ? Doc ships them stock with a Russian military 6n14n / El84 power tube. It's a very sturdy tube, long lived and quiet. If you don't have the stock 6n14n, or if you do and need a new one, I'd recommend contacting forum member Perry R. ztalk.proboards.com/user/8193 He's the source for the stock tube, which I understand is a different version of the 6n14n that's sold by various tube retailers. Here's a link to a thread about the tube. ztalk.proboards.com/thread/72832/6n14n-availableSome other things I've noticed effect the hum level in my Maz 8 would be, how hard I'm hitting the front end with an overdrive pedal, how high I set the Volume, Master Volume, Cut & Reverb knobs. Single coils or Humbuckers, flourescent lights on, and how well grounded is the circuit I'm plugged into, etc. It's possible to make a single ended amp hum loudly. It's also possible to minimize the hum level. Just depends on how you set it up. I can't hear any hum when I'm playing, it's not a problem for me. Others find it annoying. Since your hum seems to be effected by the Pentode / Triode switch, what Z Steve said .... start with the output tube. Good luck. Let us know how it works out.

Hi guys, thanks for the advice. I am the second owner of the amp, it was retubed with a JJ el84 recently, but before I purchased it. I did try to swap another el84, with no noticable change. I will try some different outlets/circuits in the house to see if there is any change. Then I will swap preamp tubes one by one. I'll post my findings. I could be making something out of nothing, it's a slight hum, most would not notice it. Thanks for your help.

Triode mode does generate a very slight hum and that is normal on the MAZ 8. Z

Thanks, that explains it. Nothing like hearing it directly from the builder! Love the amp, keep up the good work🤘
