Hi all,
I’m new here and new to Dr Z. I bought a used Z28 on reverb and it arrived in showroom conditions everything appears to work as it should but I am very disappointed in tone compared to the video clips I have seen. My does not break up at all it stays clean right to 10 the 3-3-3 setting that sounded like AC/DC in demo video sounds like a very loud clean amp on mine. No dirt I have tried humbucker a and single coils and this thing has no dirt. Sounds great with a pedal but so do much cheaper fenders. What’s going on with mine? Thanks in Advance

Welcome to the Forum - a lot of great info and guys here. Mine breaks up without having it dimed. Do you know what tubes are in the amp? Sometimes people switch them out to try and get a cleaner sound. There is a link in the Dr. Z amps.com above that will give you Doc's recommended tube complement - check to see if they have been swapped out. Here's the link: drzamps.com/support/tube-info/Also, what speaker(s) are you using? That can make a huge difference as well. This is what it should sound like drzamps.com/video/?ytpage1=4drzamps.com/video/?ytpage1=4

Yeah, something doesn't sound right. I play 100% clean and I have to stay below 10:00 on the volume if the B&T are at 3:00 or it starts to crunch through a pretty clean and efficient 2x12 cab, even with vintage output single coils. IMO, it pretty much has to be the speaker(s), tubes, or bias.

May want to see a tech as the amp may be biased “cold” so there’s a lot of clean headroom without pushing the amp. Another option already mentioned is to check the tubes and I’d look specifically at V2 which is the PI. If it’s a 5751 it will lower the gain (sounds killer though) vs a 12AX7 which will gain it up a bit. Also, not sure it’d work but it may have come with 6L6s instead of 6V6 tubes which would keep it cleaner longer but may stress the power section. If it is biased cold having the aforementioned tubes will still yield a clean tone. What speakers are in your 2/12? If they’re super efficient that could be part of the problem. Ridgeback and Jaguarguy are on point with their comments. Welcome to the board and please keep us informed of your findings. Z Amps are addictive Bc the tones are so good,

I would do exactly what Christopher wrote, step by step.
