Just snagged me a 1x12 combo Stangray. Hopefully be here next week. Moving over from my Maz18nr 1x12. Anxious to play it for sure. I’m a telecaster player and I hope this gives the goods...

I've had every EL84 offering the good Dr. makes (except the GT and Monza).....This is by-far, my absolute FAVORITE amp! I've even had the Z-Wreck, and while I loved the Z-Wreck.....The Ray is "my" amp.
Congrats!

My local guitar center actually has a z wreck combo on the sales floor. I came close to trying to work a deal on it, but I don’t really need the gain it has on tap. So, hence getting the Stang Ray. I can always add dirt pedals to get any gain I need, but that chimey, 3D clean...

Agreed! The Ray is "My Amp"! I love my other Z's but the Ray is "the ONE"!

Amp arrived DOA. Very loud screeching when you turn the volume knob from zero to on. Doesn’t matter if anything is plugged into the inputs or not. Audible hum from the unit with nothing plugged in at all. Have already changed all the tubes, no difference. Sounds like something has shorted out or is arching... bummer. Going to have to either return for a refund or I guess send it to the factory for repair on my dime. No competent techs in my area...

Sorry to hear that. It's a real let-down when you've paid all the money and waited for the delivery truck...only to have it not work. When my amp makes a loud screeching noise, people tell me to take lessons.

Yes, sending it back for a refund. The best I can figure out, something is wrong with the 12ax7 tube slot. A bunch of changing swapping all the tubes over and over and the amp starting working. There is a sovtek 12ax7LPS in the tube socket that arrived with the amp and was in the amp when it was turned on for the first time and squelched, screeched so bad. I have tried numerous other 12ax7s and they all present the screeching, crackly loud sounds. The sovtek in the slot now doesn’t present any adverse or non-normal occurrence. But, it did upon original start up... I’m baffled other than some kind of tube socket issue.

That's to bad Rob. I hope, in the end, it all works out for you. Thank I appreciate it. No matter what I did the crackle would just not let up. Oh well, the seller on reverb was great in taking the amp back and sent a prepaid ups label to get it back to them. I seriously contemplated just keeping it and sending it off to the dr z factory for repair, but with the amount of money I spent just purchasing it, I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Paying that kind of money and having to turn around and send it off for repair work didn’t sit right. Anyway, in the meantime I bought me a deluxe reverb reissue to function as a backup till another Z comes along. This was my 4th Z amp, and the only one that I ever had any kind of issue with. I’m figuring it had problems and got traded in on some other gear and then just resold after that. If you see a Stangray for sale, let me know...!

Surprisingly, some of the fastest shipping I've had was from Canada. I bought a guitar Saturday afternoon and had the guitar by Tuesday morning!

I’m actually giving reverb.com/item/8442490-dr-z-stang-ray-head on reverb some serious thought. I really wanted to stick with a 1x12 combo as I already have a nice padded studio slips cover and a road case that fits the dr z 1x12 amps. Price wise, I’d be in about the same ballpark going head and cab vs combo since this is the used market. I’m apprehensive at this point getting an amp shipped all the way from Canada to Texas since the first one had some problems. decided to get me a 1x12 ghia. Going to run it stereo with a deluxe reverb.

The Stang Ray is one of my favorite amps ever, and I’ve ever played a LOT of them. Z wise I’ve played the Z Wreck, Maz 18, and Mazerati, the Mazerati coming in a close 2nd to the Ray.
