What overdrive pedals are you using with the Maz Jr.? The Full-Drive 2 is favorite of mine with most amps, but not with the Maz Jr. What are your favorites?

I use the Route 66 pedal (TS-like overdrive + compressor) and I like it quite a bit. I also use a Blues Driver I moded with the H20 kit from www.monteallums.com. It sounds great. Right now, I'm using it as a lead boost. If I turned the gain all the way down it would be quite clean, but I have it up a little bit to thicken things up and is sounds great.

What overdrive pedals are you using with the Maz Jr.? The Full-Drive 2 is favorite of mine with most amps, but not with the Maz Jr. What are your favorites? Wow, I found the FD2 to work incredibly well with the Maz 18. In fact, everybody likes those tones better than the distortion tones I'm getting out of my Hot Cat 30R! Try setting up the Maz & FD2 like this (for single-coil PUPs). Oh yeah, the best tubes I've ever used with this amp (for distortion tones) are black-plate Ei-ECC83s in V1/V2 and Sovtek 12AX7LPS in V3. Maz 18: Volume: 12:00 Treble: 10:00 Mid: 1:30 Bass: 10:00 Cut: MAX Master Volume: As high as venue permits FD2 (for solos): Mode: Vintage (for neck PUP), FM (for neck/middle) Level: 1:00-2:00 Tone: 3:00 Overdrive: to taste (mine varies per song, but 11:00 most of the time) Boost: 4:00-4:30 FD2 (for rhythm): Mode: FM Level: 10:00-10:30, depending on rhythm level needed Tone: 2:30-3:00 Overdrive: to taste for rhythm needs (mine around 10:00-10:30 Boost: to taste for rhythm needs (mine not used)

Believe it or not, I've been using the Digitech Bad Monkey with my Maz-18 for over a year, and I'm still very impressed with it.
It seems to play really well with the Maz and digs out some fantastic tones - particularly on the low end.
I've gigged with it, recorded - seems to do everything I need.
And it's CHEAP!

Still using my Keeley Phat BD. Can go from a clean boost to screaming distortion. Very versatile pedal, and my maz seems to like it too.

I'm still on the fence...It will either be a Mosferatu, Dual Drive & or Power Driver...PD has yet to arrive.

Check out the English Muffin. I really like it, especially for heavy overdrive/distortion. For the suble stuff, the Maz is better on its own.
I'm going to build a Supreaux (Supro tone in transistor pedal!) next week. I'll let ya'll know.....

The flagship of my setup is my modded BOSS CE3 'Atom Smasher' compressor. It'll drive the front end great, and give the feel of an amp on '10'.
For drives I have several which sound great. I rotate them in and out according to what I need. I use 2 differently modded Danelectro Daddy-o drives. One is a BIG BASS mod, the other is a smooth mid mod with asymmetrical clipping and mosquito top end taken out.
I also use a modded 70's MXR Distortion I modded using all LEDs in place of the stock germaniums.
I have a Stock and a modded Bad Monkey. Also for heavy stuff, a Modded DOD Supra Distortion. Also a Barber Direct Drive SS, and the one that stays on my pedal board no matter what, Barber LTD.
Fun stuff.

I use mainly my Seymour Duncan pickup booster (SFX-01) which is a clean boost of 6-25 dB.
It's like sending a bigger guitar into the input. I'll also use a BOSS superoverdrive.

I'm still using a Boss OD-1 that I bought new in 1979! I think it's the best all-round od I've ever owned. I like the way it sit's in the mix, the way it compresses the siginal just a little bit and the way it slightly rolls the bottom off. It as a clarity about it that let's all the notes through. It reminds me of a 50 watt plexi head that I use to have.
Don Butler went into it a few years ago and tweaked it just a little, it's now good for another 25 years.
I also use a Proanalog Dual Drive, a Zendrive and a Proanalog Power Driver but, the go to pedal is still the Boss OD-1. I bought another OD-1 on fleabay a year or so ago because, I was afraid that I may need a backup. I put that one on my practice board.
Peace, TK

Frantone "Brooklyn Overdrive"
Seems to be the best OD pedal I've used with lower wattage amps (Maz 18, Z-28, Pro Jr, Ghia)... actual volume boost and more low end which is hard to get from an already cranked low watt amp...all 3 controls set at 11 oclock.

I've tried a lot of pedals in all price ranges and I think the best is an unmodded Boss DS-1. I run it behind a Keeley Compressor and turn the Tone and Distortion knobs all the way DOWN then set the Level a little over unity gain for a boost. With the Keeley in front, and the Maz Jr. behind, I can get ridiculously long sustain.

Mazmaster, that's a beautiful looking rig you have. Do you get to crank it up at home very often.

Forgive me for jumping in here because I have a Maz 38, not 18. I really like my Reverend drivetrain overdrive. I turn the treble almost all the way up and the bass to about 2:00. I turn the gain all the way down and the volume a little over unity. This is a very tranparent sound. It does compress, which I like. For more harmonics and sustain run a compressor into it. I've tried a lot of o/d pedals, including a Bad Cat 2 tone, and I like the Reverend just as well or better. I have a AnalogMan King of Tone on order, we'll see if it shoots my Reverend out of the saddle.

The FD2 works pretty good for me. on many other amps I liked it with the comp-cut know down, but with this amp, the cmp-cut know up makes it sound great.

Zendrive and TS-9 (stock) for me. When using dirt pedals I run the MV up and V down and without pedals I use the MV lower and V up all the way for the natural rock sound in the Max18

The Burriss Boostier works well for me. I also have a Maxon OD-820 that I sometimes combine (set clean) for more push. I'm looking for a used Burriss Boostiest to try. I had a Fulldrive 2 I used for over a year with my Maz 18 but it never did it for me.

I haven't gotten my Jr yet (hopefully it's on the way) but I've been using a bunch of pedals that I hope will compliment this amp. FD2, Voodoo Sparkle Dr, Keeley Mod BD, AC Booster, RC Booster, and a Boss DS1 - I think each has its own sound - can't wait to experiment. BTW - I was going to post a pic of the pedal board - how do I do that???

Brand new (well, used, but new to ME) Jr NR... I've got a Homebrew Power Screamer and Tim Jauernig's new double Diabolical Gristle Tone Manipulator in front, a Fender tuner, Dano PBJ delay, and an Everman Pot pedal for solo boosts if I need 'em. The Power Screamer into the DDGTM is noiseless, and you can also cascade both channels of the DDGTM for all the gain you could want.
Totally experimental at this point, but it's going live for the first time tonight and tomorrow and we'll see how it works. Sounds like utter dynamite in my basement so far though.

What overdrive pedals are you using with the Maz Jr.? The Full-Drive 2 is favorite of mine with most amps, but not with the Maz Jr. What are your favorites? IMO, the FD2 is a perfect match for the Maz 18, but you gotta' be using the settings shown below (from a previous post). After spending a lot of money and time testing every conceivable modern production tube (from various distributors) and running all the combinations against my THD-Flexi and Bad Cat Hot Cat 30R at gigs and having band members, musicians in the audience and music-lovers judge the results, the following rig was unanimously judged as having the "best tone". One bassplayer said it "sounds like Robben Ford's Dumble...what is that Z thing you're using"? Several guitarists said the high gain leads "sound like Eric Johnson" while the lower gain leads/rhythm "sound like SRV". The guitar used was an Anderson Classic with Kinman AVn-Blues PUPs and all signal cabling was George L's. Speaker cable was Evidence Audio. Try this out and thank me later. ;>) Maz 18 Junior NR into Kinman Highway 61 with British-made G12H-30s: V1-V3: Tung-Sol 12AX7 Power: GT-EL84-S, #6 Rectifier: GT-5AR4 (i.e. Sovtek) Maz 18 Settings: Volume: 12:00 Treble: 9:00-10:30 (to taste, to room) Middle: 1:30 Bass: 10:30 (+/- to room) Cut: MAX Fulldrive 2 Lead: (Vintage Mode, Comp Cut OFF) Volume: 1:00 Tone: 3:00-3:30 Overdrive: 11:00 (low gain lead) Boost: 3:00 (high gain lead) Fulldrive 2 Rhythm: (FM Mode, Comp Cut OFF) Volume: 10:30 Tone: 3:00 Overdrive: 10:30 (low gain dirty rhythm) Boost: unused

Hi, what about a VoodooLab SparkleDrive? I think that´s a real cool Overdrive with a clean boost, with which you can dial in your original sound, like a mix

But, for OD purposes, the Fulldrive 2 blows it away...IMO.

For low-gain stuff, I really like my Barber LTD. Still looking for something for higher gain stuff. Thinking OCD, maybe.

I just got an OCD and it sounds good with the Maz Jr. for lower gain slighlt overdriven to nice crunch tones. But... to these ears the Barber Direct Drive SS will do the high gain, singing tone better. (FWIW my Maz is the NR w/ Celestion Blue)

I've now started using an FD II and an OCD. Might try the Banzai Fireball in the FD II's place as well... Very similar pedals, Fireball a little more open sounding.
Barber's stuff IS terrific. The Direct Drive, and the old DDSS, are both GREAT pedals. I sold mine a few months back in one of my periodic fits of thinning the "heard". But I've never met an overdrive I didn't like for at least 10 minutes or so.
All that said, I pulled everything out of the Maz 18 and the 38, plugged a nice standard Jauernig DGTM straight into them, and almost cried at the tone. damn! Jauernig is definitely someone you should check out, especially if you like Dave barber's stuff.

I love the sound of the Maz with just an RC Booster in front (wonder if you could build that circuit right into an amp front end?), and for heavier crunch I have an old 80s Proco RAT.
I have few pedals now, but you guys are stoking the GAS flames--I've gotta check out the recent stuff you're talking about...Diabolical Gristle Tone Manipulator? Love that name!
