I don't think there's ever been a Z amp with a headphone jack, why is this? I know playing through headphones isn't anyones first choice but it's better than not being able to play at all

If you have to play so quiet that you need headphones, and I get that some times you do, you might as well use a good modeling amp for that.

Kemper? I think the closest the Doc ever got to headphones was the Maz 8 in the Triode setting!

A man has his limits... Amen. One can only take so much! Since nobody else said it, I will. Doctor Z makes performance amps built for the stage.

No one here has ever been in a situation where they wanted to play but people were sleeping?

Doc has a couple of amps that you can play quietly - you should take a look at the Cure with both a MV and a great "Level" control knob. It will get you as close to real bedroom volumes as anyone can do.

No one here has ever been in a situation where they wanted to play but people were sleeping? Sure, but that's not really the purpose. Doc's amps are made to be loud and proud, cut through the mix, stage monsters that rise above the rest. In the 10 years that I've been using Z's for gigging they shine on stage. The Mini and the Cure are more designed for lower volume but they still need to breathe to sound great. Every part is carefully married to provide great tone including the output section and speaker. Why would I want to shell out a $1800 -$3000 for an amp I'm going to plug headphones into that is only using a small section of the preamp? I wouldn't. If I want to play at headphone levels I'll spend a couple hundred on something specifically made for the application and keep the Z's rockin at stage volume.

No one here has ever been in a situation where they wanted to play but people were sleeping? You can get a Weber Mass 50 for less than $100. That has a headphone jack on the back, and lets you play through a pristine circuit that hasn't been compromised by having a load box and a headphone jack added...

But isn't the Mass 50 a load box, with a headphone jack added?

Yes but it’s not muddying up the circuit itself until you add it afterwards versus having it mucking up things all the time inside the amp. Even so, most line outs on load boxes sound terrible without a speaker simulator. Weber might fix that since they work a speaker motor into a lot of their designs.

And at least you're getting the signal from the power amp. A lot of on board direct outs send you the signal from the preamp only. It's gross...

I keep an old Line 6 Pod around just to play through headphones. It's not the best sounding option but it was cheap and works fine for me. All of these headphone amps are a compromise of sorts. It's just a matter of where you compromise. I can play as long and loud as my ears can stand and I'm not burning up precious tubes. In order to sound like my Z I would need something like a Torpedo Live loadbox or a Kemper. It's just not worth it for me.

It's small, cheap, has line in and headphone out jacks. I love it. Last summer I took it out on the lake on a pontoon boat and had a blast. Not bad sounding for a 3" speaker...an added plus is the built in delay. I think I paid $60 for it.
