My Stock 1-12 Maz 18 has become my favorite live gig amp in spite of loving my Z-Lux. I play Teles thru the 2nd input and use a Brake Lite sometimes, but never more than two clicks. Also use a pedal board with an OCD, EP and RC booster , Paisley deluxe, and a Carl Martin Quattro. I usually don't stack my boosters or drives but leave the Quattro compressor on all the time with the compression at 9:00 or lower. The Maz never fails to cut thru the mix, I play in a Country/Rock cover band that plays without mic'ing thru the board and so we play pretty loud on stage. So my question is would a Maz 8 add anything tonally to what I already have? I also have a Princeton RI and Super Reverb RI but the Maz takes pedals the bets of them all! Thanks!

I'm really blessed...among other Z amps, I too have a Z-Lux and a Maz 18NR. Lately I've been gigging my Maz 8 more than the other two. Being a single ended amplifier, it has a sweetness of tone that the push pull output amps lack. So yeah, it's going to add a different variety of tones, clean to overdrive. I love the 8 because it's so controllable and easy to get set up. I don't usually have to change my tone controls much, just the cut. It also has the pentode/triode mode switch that basically gives you two amps in one. It's a great amp and I think everybody needs one! I have a Brake Lite installed in my 1x12 Maz 8 combo and it comes in handy. I have the amp right beside my couch and I've been playing my Strat through it for a couple of hours. It's just a sweet, sweet amp.

The Maz 8 does have a different tone than the 18, especially the NR. Also consider the new z-plus, just to throw a monkey in the gears

If you’re looking for something low wattage, I’ve found the mini z to be a great compliment to my maz 18 and princeton reverb.

Well , I was hoping somebody would try to talk me out of it haha! But, I have feeling I might pull the trigger in the future. What speaker do you have/recommend? Is yours the Studio size or the regular size cabinet? I am your age and am looking for something lighter than the Maz 18...do you notice a considerable difference in weight?

I've been through a bunch of speakers with my Maz 8. Celestion Blue, G12H30, V30, several others. I settled on Doc's Z-12 speaker. I have it in 3 of my Z's, the Z-Lux and both of my Maz amps. I love that speaker.

I have a Z-Lux, Maz 8, and a Cure. I use my Maz 8 at church and small club gigs where volume is a problem. I sold my first Maz 8 in early in 2015 and I missed it so much that I bought a new one in 2016. I use the Z-Lux for bigger gigs and the Cure at jams and open mic nights. I had a Maz 18NR since 2012 but sold it this summer because of the weight and the volume. I don’t use attenuators in any of my amps.

If you’re looking for something low wattage, I’ve found the mini z to be a great compliment to my maz 18 and princeton reverb. If it was to be used strictly for home low volume use, does the mini have any kind of clean head room (clean to slightly dirty) and still have decent tone? Or is it really about getting some low level grind tones? I've actually got my 18 set up pretty well for cleanish, fairly low volume home practice but when everyone else goes to bed and I gotta get quieter, it's really overkill.

For me and home use the mini is a hit. Plenty of cleans with single coils. Breaks up faster with humbuckers but still loud enough cleans for practice at home. Reacts really well with changes to the volume on your guitar. A thicker tone than the Maz has. I run mine through Doc’s 1x12 convertible cab in open back mode loaded with a celestion blue. It’s loud enough in a 14x16’ room that I usually run it at 2 clicks on the attenuator with volume at noon for a slight breakup. Move it to 4 when my wife is home. Perfect for low volume practice at that level. She’ll be in the next room over watching tv and can barely hear me.
