Hi everyone!
I need a little help over here in Sweden! My Stang Ray is really starting to boggle my mind. A while ago i heard a popping sound when i turned it off and thought that it was a little bit louder than usual. When i turned it on again it was hissing and humming like hell and my guitar signal sounded really weak an fuzzy. I tried swapping cables and the 12ax7 (had a spare) but this did not help so i ruled that one out. The four EL84s was changed like six months back (one of them crapped out and started flashing blue light) and haven't been played much since.
Half an hour ago I swapped the EF86 and turned on the amp again. Dead quiet and crystal clear guitar sound again. I was relieved that it was such an easy fix. I kept on playing for 10 minutes and started hearing som kind of distortion when i played a little bit harder. This got worse and worse and short after the fuzzy sound was back and the hissing as well.
Anyone have any idea what this could be? The fuses seem ok and all the tubes are glowing in a healthy looking manner.

I'd guess power tubes, even if they are new. Try turning the amp around and watching the power tubes as you are playing and see if anything weird is going on. It might be a thing where they are okay when they are colder but as they heat up they start misbehaving. If you don't see anything, it doesn't rule out the power tubes, but if you see them doing strange things it will let you know the problem is likely there. Also, try what's recommended here. drzamps.com/info/faq-troubleshoot/

Thanks for the help! That might be be the issue. I turned it on (cold) again and the hum/hiss wasnt there even though it distorted (not the wanted kind) when i played a bit harder. I could not see anything from the powertubes though. I guess I'll have to swap them again..

Ok, so what I can see is that one of the EL84s is red plating. If i recall it correctly u shouldn't have to rebias the stang when changing tubes? Did I get an unmatched set or tubes or what is causing the tube to redplate? The new ones are JJ's btw.

Tube probably went south. Time for a new set

Yep the tube is bad. A new set should make things right. I'd keep the good ones for spares. There is a chance the tube took out something else when it went. When you put the new tubes in, give them a look while playing for a bit. If things look weird again, shut it down and take it to a tech.

Ok, So i swapped the powertubes. It sounds rather good but I think the PT's are still kinda redplating? The pic might overexaggerate it a bit but what do you think? imgur.com/a/cdNZN

Well, turned out to be anything but normal. Just recently fired it up and the same problem occurred, no guitar signal and just a load of hum... CRAP!

Could you have had a prior go bad and take out a screen resistor? It sounds like you need to get it looked at

Not unlikely, just hope it didnt blew two quads of power tubes.
