Hello,
Yesterday I had the chance to have my first reahersal with my new Rem. I was able to obtain on half power a very good crunch tone.
In order to boost the gain I tried to increase the high/normal volumes and leaving the MV at about 11:30. What I got was a kind of "thin" sounding overdrive. Boosting with an OCD with less drive from the amp gave me much better results.
Do you guys have some advice on how to get the best overdriven tones from my Remedy?
The speaker (a V30) is brand new...so I guess it does have a great effect on the overall tone.
Thanks

Thick tone comes from the powert tubes. The more you crank the gain volumes (preamp) and lessen the master you’ll get a thinner sound since you’ll be hearing more of the preamp tubes. Unfortunately and fortunately VOLUME will get you there. The more you crank the master the richer the sound will be, more so in the 40watt setting. Cheers!

The Remedy is a great amp with a great master volume, but as juxtapolice said, you need to drive the power tubes. I have to use an attenuator on mine to get the sounds you are looking for. About 10 dB of attenuation in my case. I fine tune it with the master volume between 3:00 and fully bypassed. The V30 will also be part of the problem. Using a Creamback will also help. It will let you run the amp about 3 dB hotter and get the rid of the upper mid spike of the V30.

I find the thicker tones with the tone stack bypassed, Regular volume at 3 o’clock or more. High volume to taste. Master around 3 o’clock. I use a BrakeLite 40 watt has more”authority” to its tone, 20 watt is more focused to my ear (Les Paul Custom ‘57 reissue) ME

What about an alnico gold or alnico cream speaker?

What about an alnico gold or alnico cream speaker? You still need to get those tubes puckering up!

The speaker (a V30) is brand new... Here's part of the problem. V30's sound TERRIBLE when brand new. You need to play the speaker at high volumes for months...then it will start to break in. A new V30 sounds very nasal. The speaker is already known for having an upper mid spike in tone. (some like it, some hate it) But with a new speaker, the cone can't move as freely, and that causes the lack of bass. All your left with is mostly that upper mid spike...very nasal. Once the speaker is broken in, the cone can move more freely and there's more bass, and the speaker's tone will be more balanced. I had a brand new V30 and it sounded terrible. It sat on a shelf for 2 years. Then I heard about breaking them in, and I hooked it up to my PA head and ran bass/drum loops through it at high volumes for 40 hours. I wrapped the speaker (not installed in a cabinet) up in a sleeping bag, and just let it blast in the basement while I was at work. The cone was flying back and forth almost 1 inch! Then I reinstalled the speaker in a cabinet and played through it. WOW, what a difference. All it needed was to be broken in. However, I will say, even with a broken in V30, it will sound very 'heavy metal' when paired with a remedy. A few years ago, I had a speaker shootout between a V30 and a greenback. To my ears, the greenback was the clear winner. The V30 was 'ok', but clearly heavy metal in tone.

I think I will definetly replace the speaker.
Options on the table are:
- Creamback - Alnico gold - Alnico cream
Everyone seems to love the creamback, but which is your opinion about the alnicos with the Remedy? They are way more costly but could think about them either...
Would they fit a 112 Dr.z Cab?

I have the Alnico Gold here and I always liked its sound, but it is a LOUD speaker compared to some other choices. A loud speaker can be a problem if you're trying to crank the power amp!

A Creamback can by itself handle the 40watts of the Remedy, so that's what I use.

Agreed, I use a pair of golds and they do sound great but they are pretty efficient speakers so they are loud.
