Hello all.
I’m new to the forum and the world of Dr. Z and am hoping for some thoughts on speaker selection. I apologize if this has been asked before but I did a bunch of searches and didn't really see anything that addressed the info I was looking for. Currently running an Antidote head with a Dr. Z 2x10 cabinet with the Z10s and am looking to add Dr.Z 1x12 cabinet but not sure what speaker I should order it with. What 12” will complement the 2x10 nicely? I really like a percussive snap with a big open articulate ring when I strum a chord (I like to hear each string ring). I don’t want any flubby low end at all no matter how hard I drive the speakers. I also want to make sure it cuts through in a mix. I play typical bar gigs with the odd outdoor show and cover everything from Top 40, disco, funk, 80’s (hair metal to new wave), classic rock, country and anything else that gets people dancing. I usually use Bogner blue and red pedals for my dirt but sometimes mix it up with BB preamp, OCD or Tube Screamers. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated?
Thanks, coverbandguy

If your cabinet is going to have a closed back I would recommend a Vintage 30. It's not my favorite speaker but in a sealed cabinet it works pretty good for classic rock. You didn't say what guitar you will use. That cab/speaker combo works especially well for making a Les Paul type cut through.

I think these guys got it right...ive been on a wgs speaker kick...one of my 3 choices were from them vetran 30...which apparently addresses a mid/spike...I have no experience...but from what your desires are sound like these fellas nailed it.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. I use a Les Paul, Tele, Strat and Gretsch 5420 so I cover quite a bit of sonic territory. Would the Celestion Gold be an option? Cheers.

Great speaker. My favorite, but I don't care for it in a sealed cabinet.

If you want a Gold that sounds great in a sealed cab, get the ASW Elegante...

I've got to back up the guys here with the V30 recommendations, I use it currently in my Maz combo and used it previously in my Z 1x12. I play mostly at church, which is like a cover band for Jesus, lol, but seriously, the church(s) I played for covered the spectrum from modern pw/rock style to progressive gospel to hymns and everything in between. The V30 handled everything with stride, its a really solid speaker. When I'm at home it everything from blues to country on into metal. at the very least the speaker is half the cost of the gold and super popular so IF you don't like it you'll have no issue unloading.

Just to confuse matters for you, I stopped using the Gold because of its kind of fizzy top end when using drive pedals. There's a You Tube video somewhere in which this can be clearly heard, and the Blue sounds better in that respect. I now use the Creamback M, and really like it. Horses for courses though, one man's fizz is another man's tone:)

Horses for courses though, one man's fizz is another man's tone:) I sort of agree with this. I'm a mild overdrive kind of player. I almost never play with anything like a screaming '80's or metal type tone anymore. I'm usually clean or with the amp on the edge of breaking up and I use a pedal to kick it a little further. I'm sure that colors my choice of preferring the C-Gold. If I was needing heavy distortion I would want a sealed cab to also have some thump. I've been there and know how that works. Some players like a Greenback type speaker in that case. I like the clarity a Vintage 30 adds.
