I’m thinking about getting a 1X10 cab for my Ghia. Currently I’m using a 1X12 Creamback 65 cab and it does sound good, just too loud for what I’m wanting to use my Ghia for. I realize the db rating is more on the gold so I’m concerned that the volume issue might be a mute point going from 12 to a 10 cab.
Will I be wasting my time going gold or should I just get the 1X10 greenback and call it good?
I started a thread about the greenback 10 not long ago and I have no doubt that it will be quieter cab. It’s just that the more I read about the gold the more I’m pulled in that direction.

The Carmen Ghia sounds great with a 10" Gold.
I am not sure it would be quieter than a 12" Creamback though. I am a really big fan of the 10" speakers with the lower power Z amps.

The Carmen Ghia 1x10 with a Gold is a superb combo. I like it better than a 1x12 Gold.

Well I’m down to either gold 10 or greenback 10. Can someone describe the tonal differences between the two when being used with the Ghia?

For me, the greenback brings out the Marshall in it and the Gold brings out the Vox.

The Gold has more top-end sparkle than the Green...Green is warmer and maybe "smoother" when driven a bit. I personally really like the 10" Gold more than the 12".

1x10 is great, but 2x10 is better!

Okay (I am already ducking here), I've NEVER preferred a 1 x 10 over a 1 x 12 speaker configuration, even for volume reduction needs....
I've had several single 10" amps, from Vintage Princetons to Ghias. Cranked up "to 11," single 10's are great, but I usually dial-in a "clean-to-slighty dirty" sonic platform, and then use pedals to get me over the top (OD/Distortion-wise).
I've just never been completely happy with the "Cleans" from a 1 x 10 package. I really enjoy a 1 x 10 combos with my band especially if we're playing loud, but in my studio playing alone (and I play fairly loud but not cranked), the 1 x 10s just seem anemic compared to a 1 x 12 (especially in Doc's 1 x 12 Conv cab).
So please understand, I love the 1 x 10 cranked, especially with the band, but for clean to slightly broken up tones, it's the 1 x 12 for me....
As far as the greenies, same deal: Love 'em "cranked and crazy," kinda meh as a general purpose speaker played more conservatively....
So to answer your question, it depends upon how you're gonna use it....Cranked and wild? I could go with the 10" Gold. However, if you're changing just to reduce the volume.... as you stated Shane, a 10" Gold will still probably be just as loud (or louder) as the less efficient but bigger Creamback, and it will probably sound "thinner" IMHO. The Green 10" will certainly be quieter, but the ability to reproduce the Ghia's wholesome timber will suffer. Personally, I'd have to hang with the Creamback, keeping the big, rich tone, and find another way to deal with the volume....

As for the other insightful comments, thanks, and they all certainly help put things into perspective for me.

I had the greenback 10" in a combo. Very low sensitivity...so lower apparent volume. Nice sound for grind but not a real cleans tone. Good luck.

I love 10" speakers, as long as there are 4 of 'em. Otherwise, I'll take 12s.

Have used both. I'll echo other experiences already listed. Gold had more top end sparkle. GB did have noticeable volume difference, which is what I was after. GB sounded better with OD pedals to me. Played mostly with a tele so I actually enjoyed the high end roll off with the GB when played clean.

Since I like my Creamback but want less volume I think I’ll go with the greenback 10. The gold is awfully tempting though.
