Has anyone tried any other speakers in their Cure? If so, what did you try and how did you like it?

I haven't swapped the speaker, but I did run an extension cab with a Celestion Blue in it. I thought is sounded pretty good.

I haven't done it yet as I'm overseas but I did score a Creamback NEO in a trade and I'm looking forward to trying either that or an Eminence Lil' Texas NEO in there.

A while back, I asked about the Neo Creamback, but didn’t get much info back; I’ll be looking forward to seeing your results.

Yes. I have a C-Rex in mine. To me, it's voiced a lot like the Z speaker with slightly rounded off highs, but it's higher efficiency adds to the headroom, which I personally like.

So what does the Cannabis Rex bring tone wise that the Z-12 lacks? My Cure sounds so good with the Z-12 that it's hard to imagine improving on it! It inspired me to change the speakers in both my Maz amps, the 8 and 18NR, to a Z-12 and I love it. Is it mostly the headroom that benefits?

headroom and a smoother top end... But my z speaker may have not been worn in.. But the rex just sounds great-clean and overdriven!!

For me, the efficiency difference allows me to run the Level at noon vs 3 o'clock....all else being equal. Both speakers sound great Dave, but I wanted a little more headroom for live use. And the slight rolloff of highs was an added benefit IMO.

I tried a blue and I think it was too voxy for me. If I played humbuckers only I would have left it.

I tried my broken in Celestion Gold. I mounted it in the Cure cabinet. For my ears, it wasn't the right speaker. It didn't produce the bigger notes and tones found in the stock Z ceramic. Everything seemed a little too focused. Not a bad sound, just different. Someone may need that sound. I put the ceramic Z back in and like it so much better than the Gold in this amp.

I plugged my Cure briefly into my 1x12 convertible cab with a Creamback. That speaker sounds great with both my Maz amps but with the Cure the Z12 sounds best. I can't imaging a Gold complementing that amp either, in fact my Gold has been sitting on a shelf for a while now, I just prefer the ceramics. I have no intention of changing that Z12 in the Cure.

I just swapped out the Z12 in my Cure for an Emmy Lil Texas, mainly in an effort to reduce weight (the Lil Texas has a neo magnet, and the speaker is about half the weight of the Z12).
I just posted under Cabs and Speakers about it this change.
For my ears it will work just fine.

I wondered this as well. Had an extra Celestion Blue that I was thinking of trying in the Cure. Thus far, my Cure has yet to see a screwdriver.

I bought my Cure used but the stock speaker was basically new when I got it as the first owner had put a Celestion Gold when new, then put the z-12 back in when sold to me. I like the amp a lot, but I found the speaker to be a bit hard, harsh for lack of better terms. Not improving much after 6 weeks of use. So, I bought a Eminence JS-1250 (Josh Smith, 12 " 50 watt) which was said to have 20 hours use. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITReyFf6iM4). This speaker is a huge improvement to my ears. It smooths out all the harshness that I didn't like. Now the amp is just perfect for my needs. I also considered the Eminence GA-SC64 (https://www.eminence.com/pdf/GA_SC64.pdf) but came across the used JS first.

The more I play my Cure with the Emmy Lil Texas, the more I like the way it sounds.
Also, by my calculations, there is about a 3 pound reduction in weight (about 10%) which is noticeable.

Today, to satisfy curiosity, and to try what others have done with success; I put a Cannabis Rex in my Cure. It's already broken in, and wow what a great sound. My stock Z ceramic probably isn't all the way broken in, but sounds great with this amp. These 2 speakers are from the same family in regards to sound. The C-Rex has a somewhat bigger bottom end. Slightly more rolled off in the top. The difference isn't drastic but just noticeable enough. A player couldn't lose with either one. The Cure is such a great amp. I haven't been this happy over an amp in a long time.

The Cure w C-Rex is my #1 gigging amp by far.

After 5 months of playing through the amp with the stock speaker I swapped it with a Weber Vintage Series 12F150 [8 ohms, 25 watts, standard dust cap, light dope]. Totally worth it.

I put a neo Creamback in the Cure 2 weeks ago. This, plus running the midrange & master at 100% give the amp a nice British flavor.

Sometimes I think of Dr Z Bass Middle Treble as Warmth/Tweed - Vox/Marshall - Fender Deluxe/twin .... they don’t just add and subtract, they multiply! Some kind of musical calculus .
