Hi everyone; my first post here. Great resource for Z fans (which includes me). I've had my 2x10 Maz Jr combo for about 5 years and love it. I've noticed that with some guitars the highs can be a little harsh (it has the Celestions Z was using back them). I've tried many different tubes over the years (although no NOS 12ax7s), and at one time I also tried a pair of Z's speakers. Have run it though a 2x12 cab with a variety of speakers, and I thought it still had that characteristic. Just wondering if anyone has tried the 10" Tone Tubby H1E speakers in a Jr. I did a search, and the discussions were limited to the use of the 12" TT. Thanks. JeffD

Jeff,
I have a Maz 18 Jr NR head and I run it into a Jenkins Highway 61 2x12 cab w/ G12H-30s. IMO, it's a match made in heaven. However, if you're looking for a smoother, darker tone, I highly recommend trying Ei-ECC83 preamp tubes. They are my absolute favorites. The highs are very sweet and musical and they overdrive with pedals in a beautiful way. The JJ-ECC803S tubes may also be a good choice because they are quite dark and fat, but I find them to be less detailed in the highs and less musical sounding.
As for the Hempcone H1E speaker, I just installed the 12" version in my Hot Cat 30R combo a couple months ago. It's an *amazing* speaker with that amp, but when I tried running my Maz 18 into the Hot Cat 1x12 cab with the H1E, it sounded pretty bad. Very flat and dull. The G12H-30s are infinitely better-sounding, IMO. I don't know if the H1E would sound better w/ the Maz 18 if it were in the Jenkins cab, but it sounded bad enough in the Hot Cat cab to not make me wanna' try!
So, I suggest trying the Ei-ECC83 preamp tubes first. It's cheap and quick and worked wonders with my amp!

You might be able to get some Z 10s if you go thru the dealer and the Doc is assured you're going to use them in a Z amp. That would probably be better for you at trade in or sell time. I've heard the Z 10s in a 2-10 cab and don't really see how it could get much better than that. I have a Tone Tubbie alnico 12" in my Maz 38 and I think it is a definite improvement over any Celestion I've ever heard. A very sweet, rich sounding speaker.

Thanks for the tips on the EI tubes, and the info on speakers. I note that Dr Z is recommending the Svetlana 12ax7 in V1 and V2 for the very thing I described, so it seems that would be worth a try as well. Billyguitar: I had a Maz 38 for a while, and thought it was brighter than the 18. I can imagine the TT speaker is great with it. From mazmaster's comment about the brief, unholy and unnatural union of the Maz 18, TT , and Bad Cat, maybe it wouldn't work so well with the 18. Thanks for all the info.

Tone Tubbies don't seem any brighter than the stock Celestion to me, just better. I do turn the cut control almost all the down. If The Maz 38 didn't have the cut control it would be hard to tame.

In direct A/B comparisons with G12H-30s, I found the H1E darker, no matter which amp I used. That's not a bad thing. Like I said, the H1E is gorgeous with the Hot Cat 30R, which tends to be a bright, chimey amp to begin with. With the Maz 18, I just found I needed to run the Treble higher. I always run the Cut maxed anyways (because it makes pedal distortion tones so much fatter) and then tame high end with Treble.
