I've heard of people cranking the bass and treble on the Gal, and on other Z's. With most of my guitars, I can't get the bass past 9:00 and the highest I can get it with any guitar is 11:00. If I go anymore it's pure mud. How do you guys run yours? And BTW, wake up everyone! There's not much activity in here

On other amps I do like to dime the bass. On the Galaxie, about 3 o'clock on the bass is the max for me. Any more and it not only adds bass but also takes away highs as well. At 3 o'clock the sound is not at all muddy with my setup but much beyond that and something is definitely lost. I usually run the treble at about 1 o'clock. All this is with single coils (Strat and Tele). I do think the guitar has lot to do with how you'd want to set the tone controls. Tubes may also have an effect.
What kind of pickups/guitar are you using?

Wow, 3:00 on the bass huh? I'd get pure mud on the bass notes. I'm using both single coil and humbucker guitars through the Gal and the bass knob gets tweaked very little... like I said, from around 9:00 to 11:00.
Don't get me wrong, I'm getting the tone I want from the amp! It sounds great. I just can't figure out how anyone can use that much bass.

Vol @ 10:00 Bass @ 12:00 Treble @ 11:00 Presence @ 9:30 using a Super Sport, neck humbucker, and rolling back to 7 on the tone control ;D ;D ;D 'course with my Tele it's a bit different. and, just a little more different with a Les Paul play on, eh Joel

Wow, 3:00 on the bass huh? I'd get pure mud on the bass notes. I played around quite a bit with the pre-amp tubes. I'd have to look again to see what I ended up with, but it did seem to have a little effect on the tone control settings. That may be why I get more rotation on the bass knob? I can't remember if I turned it that far with the tubes that came in it, but I'm pretty sure they were not the stock tubes either (bought my Gal used). Also may be the speakers? I'm running a v30 and a g12H30 in an openback 2x12 cab. Anyway... It's interesting to compare notes. And by the way Joel, Do you find you play your LP much with this amp? I've really always been a Fender guy and mostly bought my LP to get more gain from the guitar and a little darker clean sound. With this amp and my 6545 I have all the gain on tap that I could ever dream of using. And I can get a great dark clean sound from the 6545 even with single coils. I've been sort of thinking about selling the LP since I don't seem to be playing it much (and I could buy a lot of other gear with the proceeds).

I find most of my play time with the Galaxie is with either of my Super Sports (ernie ball music man) ;D Have also found that I tend to use the neck pickup or middle position and no pedals ;D ;D It makes me happy, and probably drives everyone else in the neighbourhood a bit crazy As for my LP? Seem to use it more with my Z-28 and the 2x10 cab. cheers Joel

I don't like to dime the bass or the treble. I've been setting them around 1:30, with presence rolled back to 11. Diming the volume and airbraking it back to survivable volume, triode, and channel one, with the guitar at 8-9, makes one of my favorite tones.
I'm not Mr. Gibbons, but I think he'd approve of this message.

On my JTM-45 I dime every control including presence and jumper the inputs as well for that classic Marshall rock tone. At 38-40 or so watts it is actually not too loud for a lot of folks and through a 4x12 closed back cab is manageable.

Current speaker in the 1x12 is a 50w alnico Blue Dog. It's good with either the Galaxie or the Rte 66, and lets each amp have its own voice pretty readily. I don't find the bass to be muddy at 1-1:30 on the Galaxie.
And the Rte 66 with dimed bass is a separate treat, kind of like a Black Cow.
