I fired up my two month old Maz 38 today and starting hearing some crackling so I poked my head around back and the left two EL84's were glowing red. I immediately shut her down and let it cool off. I tried it again later and as soon as I took it off standby they started cooking again. Bad tubes I presume?

Sure sounds like a bad set of power tubes.

I was thinking the same but is it normal for two tubes to red plate?

Ipfreak, I read your service request Saturday night on your 38 that you purchased in June. Don in repairs will address it on Monday. But in the mean time try swapping the left set of tubes with the right set of tubes. Put tubes from position one and two in slots three and four, and of course put 3&4 in 1&2. Power up the amp and see if the red plate tubes follow the move. This will tell if you have a bad tube , or an issue with say a grid connection to the offending socket location.

I swapped the tubes around and the red plating definitely followed the tubes so I'm assuming those two bit the dust.

Well I guess the good news is that's an easy fix.

Well Don sent me a pair of new tubes. I fired her up multiple times now and no red plating so all is well.

Awesome customer service! Just love to see this. Better get used to it! That's why a number of us own several of Doc's amps. Tubes these days are just a real crapshoot.
