Seriously considering getting either EMS head or combo. At the moment I've got Bad Cat Cub III40 (also EL34s in it) & an Orange 212 closed back cab with Vintage 30s. So I'd appreciate if you tone wise dudes told me how'd the EMS probably sound with my Orange cab compared to EMS matching cabinet! What would I get or miss?
Also could get the whole stack and use the Dr Z cab with my Bad Cat, selling the Orange. Initially I was looking for a combo, still do. So the Bluesbreaker configuration is one way to go, though a pretty hefty load to move.

Most people on this forum are going to agree that the the speaker or speakers the Doc ends up putting in a particular amps is the best one or combo for that amp. So, the EMS probably sounds the best, to Doc's ears (and they are great ears), with a Creamback and a H30. But I am sure the V30 would sound killer too.
The combo looks so sexy, but I am with you on it being hefty to move! I am a head / cab guy myself, but the EMS combo could, possibly get me to change my ways.

I think the head and cabinet looks mystical.

I know there's lots of comparisons on V30 vs. G12-65 or any thing. Someone said there's more vintage tone & smoother cleans in G12-65s. Been thinking maybe changing my cab anyway because partly I miss the openness of open back cabs.Just thinking if the combination of the smoother G12-65 & closed back cab might get too dark as a general rule or with my Bad Cat for example.Obviously not with EMS. Of course I'd like to have a cab I could use with both EMS & BC CubIII40.

I ran my EMS with both two Alnico Blues and then with two greenbacks - hands down for the greenbacks. Why not get a convertible cab??

Given the voicing of the amp (classic Marshall), I gotta think you'd want to run speakers voiced like what you'd find in a 1970s Marshall cab-- pulsonic cone Greenbacks or similar. G12-65 would also likely work well. I'd favor speakers sorts of voiced in that realm. IMO, a V30 is probably too bright for the EMS.
If I had the cash, I'd do Heritage greenbacks. Since I don't, I think the WGS Green Beret/Invaders are very cool speakers in that kind of voicing. (I have in my Z cab at present two WGSs: the Invader (50w greenback voice) and the ET65 (pretty much a G12-65). They are EXCELLENT speakers and reasonably priced.
Depending which amp I'm running, I'll mike either the Invader or the ET65.
So those are my recommendations if you want to mess around with speaker swaps.
But I will re-affirm the idea here that Doc's ears lie even less than Shakira's hips. It's going to be VERY hard to improve on whatever speaker config Doc ships with a given amp.

It's funny as we tried a EMS chassis loaded into a Classic 1x12 combo cab and experimented with at least 15 differant speakers. We tried a variaty of Warehouse Speakers, Eminence Speakers , as well as Celestion. The best sounding one of the lot was a V-30. But it was very loud and Mid centered , a bit boomy for my taste and the 1X12 format didn't do the EMS any favors . I installed a high powered G 12 H Creamback, 75 watt, but unfortunately it was blown so couldn't test it , will get another as I feel that might give the right Vintage style tone with less dB.
The V 30 had some nice qualities especially in the Cleaner regions , its Overdriven sounds were focused and beamy , probably not bad on a big stage , but a bit brutal in a stand alone test. We ended the test by plugging back into the two Greenback Bluesbraker cab, and hands down the best tones of the afternoon. We all shook our heads and said you can't beat that. I never did care for 1X12 JCM 800 combo's, just too much amp squeezed through a small open back cab.

I have recently acquired a CubIII 40, and it is currently sitting on an Orange cab with a V30. I was quite surprised that that combo was so much darker than my HC 30 or Dumble clones. That said, the EMS might behave well with the closed back with the V30. Try it- see if it works for you.

I did a shootout with my Remedy....an amp that's in the same ballpark as the EMS. (probably the same dugout)
Here's my opinion:
Greenback: Classic rock V30: heavy metal G12H: Just awful
Hands down, the greenback (or derivatives or clones) are the speakers to use with amps that fall into the vintage 4 input Marshall camp.

I never did care for 1X12 JCM 800 combo's, just too much amp squeezed through a small open back cab. It's interesting to me how a small amp into a large cab can sound huge. But stuff a 100w Marshall through a tiny cabinet and it sounds, well, not so impressive. Even a little <5W amp pushing a 1960a is enough to cause cognitive dissonance.

Just curious as to why the EMS combo and 2 x 12 have different speaker configs?
Greenbacks didn't sound as-glorious in the 2 x 12?

Thinking of having one made for my Laney combo and separate 1x12 speaker cab. It's just so much nicer (and easier on my back). Having thought my body was indestructible, a few herniated discs disproved that theory at age 30. Take care of your backs. I've seen more than a few guys in bands playing clubs and causal gigs end up goofing their backs.

I have the H30/creamback 2x12 matchup but I'm not sure about those. I may pull them out and put in my Heritage G12-65's. I know what they can sound like! They are classic rock! I should give these a descent chance to break-in . But ?
