Hello everyone , I bought a stang ray on reverb.com , and when I received it I turned it on and it didn't sound good at all, it had a loud hum unless I touched the strings or any grounded parts, it also sounded very thin and sterile. I looked at the tubes and noticed one of the power tubes was cracked .. so I ordered a full new set of jj tubes. When I got the tubes i fired the amp up and it sounds great for only a few seconds then it gets noisy and distorted. I swapped the new ef86 with the old one and it goes back to the thin sterile sound with a loud grounding hum... my guess is it's just a bad ef86 and the new jj ef806s I got was bad. What do you guys think?

Welcome. I think you need to ship it to me and I'll sort it out and get it back to you in a couple of years. Just kidding because I've wanted to try a Ray and they are hard to find, at least around here. I think you have more than just a bad tube. Time to open it up. It sounds like that's not something you need to be doing so it needs to go to a competent tube amp tech. Z amps are simple but well thought out designs. Find a tech who can repair but WILL NOT ALTER IT or send it to Dr. Z. I believe they will do a complete check-up for around $100. That's a bargain depending on what you have to pay for shipping.

Welcome to the Forum - a lot of great people and information here.Whenever I have a problem I always try using Doc's trouble shooting procedure from his website. drzamps.com/info/faq-troubleshoot/Unfortunately, it could be one of your new tubes - they are such a crap shoot nowadays. Zpilot is right, worse comes to worse you can send it back to Doc and he'll fix it quickly at a very reasonable price. I've sent several of my amps to him and they always come back better than new. Finally, you can contact Don at the Z-Repair shop and see if he has any insights on what you might do to fix problem.

Sending it to Dr. Z is by far the best thing you can do. No one knows the amp like Z and his crew and if it's been modded they can put it back to as good or better than new. Best customer service in the biz! I would run any used amp through the Z shop after purchase, otherwise you'll always wonder "is this what it really sounded like new?".

It's the tubes 90+ percent of the time. Doc told me once that many of the amps that get mailed back in for service only require a tube change.
