So last night I was asked to fill in last minute for my buddies band, so I didn't wanna lug all my gear to the venue for a last minute deal. I did use my own pedalboard and guitars but a friend let me borrow his Vox AC30TBX. That amp was the LOUDEST amp I've ever played! My bud who owns the amp suggested I jumper the channels together and I did, which helped with the Ice Pick in the ear thing. The tone was AMAZING but the volume was way too much! It got real loud real fast, like 1 is inaudible and 4 was face melting. So what is it that makes that 30 watt Vox so much louder than, say, my old 50 watt Marshall or my 35 watt Supro, or even my Remedy? I know wattage= headroom, not volume, but still!

I never played that Vox, but I gig the Remedy and the Z-Wreck. Both are loud amps, but especially so in a real small room. Of course, they are not physically louder in a smaller room but they are harder to control in small rooms. So, if you were in a smaller room last night, that might explain it a little bit.

Speaker efficiency for starters i.e decibel rating A 97db greenback v a celestion gold at 100 db remember 3 db difference is double the volume as db is a logarithmic scale not linear. Also if it's a 2x12 it will be louder. Saying that l have a greenback in my Maz 18 NR and its the kin loudest 18 watts your likely to hear.

The room was about the size of a high school gym. No padding anywhere, all concrete floor, vaulted ceiling, terrible echo haha

A 30 watt Class A amp (which is what the Vox is) can easily keep up with a 50 watt Class AB one. Well, it's not true Class A but close enough. Also, the taper of the volume control determines how quickly the power increases. As you say, 4 was pretty loud. But that may be as loud as the amp would get and everything above that is just more saturation. Like the way a Blackface Fender doesn't get much louder after 4 and anything above 6 is just mush.

Wattage is and always has been deceiving when it comes to volume. Too bad amp makers back in the day didn't use SPL (Sound Pressure Levels ) as a rating when all this started instead of watts.
