Hey fellas, my wife is shopping for a birthday present for me and I've been jonesing for a Gretsch for a while now. I've had my eye on this orange beast... Gretsch G5420TThey sure are purty, and with the black FilterTrons I bet that they sound nice too. Going over to the local unmentionable store tomorrow to try one out. What say you who have experience with these? I've not had a Gretsch in my hands in 45 years, and I really don't know anything about their current line up. I sure do like the way it sounds in clips though. I've been a Fender and Gibson guy my whole life. Time to get some variance in my sound and I'd love to hear from anyone who knows these guitars. What do you like or hate about them?

I have an eight-year old Gretsch Setzer Hotrod that I really like, and I had a Black Falcon for awhile that I traded off with some regret (I didn't like the way the Bigsby was set up, and I didn't like the roller bridge, but man--the coolness factor was off the charts). At least on the higher end models, the build quality is excellent, and the TV Jones pickups they're using are outstanding. I don't have any experience with the more basic models, though.

I'm still a Rickenbacker guy, but my most recent guitar is a Gretsch 6620 Players' Special. It really turned my head. It's gorgeous, classic and anachronistic- values I seem to appreciate.
I've had guitars for 40 years, but it was my first time with a Bigsby- I like that a lot. Plays like a dream and the 'trons have almost everything I like about single coils, but not the noise. That guitar is in heavy rotation now. I will say that some of the more refined Gretsches play a little nicer than most of their less expensive models, but if you try several, you should find something nice.

I'm close to pulling the trigger on a G5622T , similar to the one you're looking at but double cutaway. The latest Vintage Guitar magazine did a review of them and gave them very high marks. Great build quality , pickups are really good and they play very well.

My wife recently bought me a Gretsch g6112tcb-jr. Fit, finish, and playability is off the charts. Sounds great with tons of mojo. It's my main guitar now. Dethroned my fender avri 52 with lollars. Still love that fender though. The Japanese professional line is something special!

Dave....I'm reviving this older thread as I'm in the same boat as you were a few years ago.....considering an Electromatic Gretsch. Never owned one. Did you get it and if so, what do you think about it?

My son and I just bought one. It's a pretty great guitar for the money.

Jon (flealux) put up a post a couple of weeks ago that stoked those flames again!

Thanks fellas. It's the last present my sweet Sue got me before she passed and it'll be with me until I do too!

Thanks fellas. It's the last present my sweet Sue got me before she passed and it'll be with me until I do too! Sweet Sue sounds like the perfect name for that guitar too. That’s one heck of a guitar from one heck of a wife! I’m sure she hears it every time you play, so play it often and loud!

I had a 6120 for awhile. I had wanted one for decades. Really nice but I decided I had too much money in it considering the amount of use it was getting. I have played the current less expensive ones and they are well worth their price. Almost all of the tone of the more expensive models. Who needs a "mud" switch anyway.

I had one just like it--sounded killer. Those mini-hums are awesome pickups, and the guitar sustained for days. The only downside was the huge case, honestly, which just didn't fit anywhere in my guitar space, and I ended up succumbing to the lure of some piece of gear I probably don't have anymore. Should've kept it--great look on stage, too.

Regarding Gretsches--the White Falcon's definitely a keeper, and I've owned and gigged a Setzer Hotrod for ten years--love it. I've had a three others that looked and sounded great, but were so unstable tuning-wise that they weren't practical as gigging guitars. I think maybe with proper setup by somebody who really knows Bigsbys they might be okay, but such a person doesn't exist around here, alas.

Usually just a matter of properly cutting the nut and keeping it lubed. Make sure the slots are not pinching the strings.
