This is my 1st post. I've been reading about the Z amps for quite some time now and have decided to ebay my Carvin Master Tube half-stack. That beast has spent almost all it's life against the wall, unplugged. Took it to my church for a while until they politely asked me to take it home and use my Blues Deluxe instead.
Anyway, my question is regarding the (if any) differences between the 18 Jr Reverb and the NR. Other than the reverb, is there a difference? I understand the NR comes with an effects loop where a reverb could be inseerted, if needed.

Well I have only played a JR with reverb once...so I am no expert. It sounds to me like there is a touch more gain on the NR model. All my amps before had reverb...but I haven't missed it. Now when I play on my Mark I or Deluxe reverb I find myself turning it(reverb) off.

I have a Maz Jr.210 with Reverb, and it's nice to use that feature for smaller rooms that are lacking ambience or naturally quite dead. For any room that's lively at all, I turn mine off as well.

Blessings! I play both of mine in Church. The NR model is more stout. I've had the verb model 2x10 since 01 and love it to pieces and when I got the NR. version it sounded dry as a mojave rattler. it has taken me some time to adjust to it and after about three months with it I can see where verb isn't really needed in a bigger room such as a Church Worship service (big sanctuary) but I still like to have a bit thrown in there as to me it feels a little more forgiving and spongy. The FX loop works great with certain FX through it also but as others on this forum have pointed out, just turn on a little slap echo from a delay pedal (I have a T-Rex ) and it sounds great like that as well. Iv'e been using it straight into the amps input still and not the FX loop yet. Just a little bit adds a nice warm fatness to the overall sound. I guess the choice is up to you. I originally got the NR version to run my rack set up through the FX loop but just haven't gotton to that yet as I'm still breaking in the speakers and just getting used to the dryness factor and different possibilities of the amp. Still a Z , still sounds XLNT!

If the seller agrees to my offer of 750 instesd of 900 on ebay, I'll be looking at an NR model, less than 6 mos. old. I have an old Ampeg fliptop SB-12 that I installed a Weber Bluedog 12" into. the cabinet is ported and for now, it's what I plan to use with the NR. Hopefully the two will get along together. the speaker is Alnico rated at 30 watts.

I've also got an SB-12. They use the 7868 power tubes. I think those tubes are being made again, or at least were made again within the last few years, in case you've been wondering about whether or not you could get new tubes for it. That Ampeg amp was supposed to be the mate for the fiberglass upright bass.

Yes, I was glad ot find online that the 7868 power tubes for the SB-12 are available again, although the ones in my amp are great - no noise - and the tone of that little amp has made it my favourite of the three tube amps that I own. The NR deal didn't pan out, so my search continues. I am leaning towards the Maz 18 Jr with reverb since I really do not need intense gain.

I have never played the reverb version of the Maz 18, but I own the NR version and just love it. Don't miss reverb at all, even at home practicing quietly or in small venues with the band. Even the smallest venues have *some* ambience. Also, from my experience with other amps, especially those that allowed the reverb circuit to be bypassed completely, I have found that reverb only gets in the way. In a band context, even in a small room, I find that it detracts from the tone and overall mix by making the amps sound too distant and disconnected from the overall mix. The punch and immediacy of the guitars is just lost. Once I got used to actually *hearing* my amp and each note clearly, I can't even play with reverb anymore! So, IMO, the only place for added reverb is in the studio, where close mic'ing essentially removes the room and where it can be added *after* the speaker and with a high quality reverb, so as not to interfere with the original tone as much. But, even then, I've heard local producers/engineers ruin dry tracks with the wrong kind or quality of reverb. So, in one demo a while back, I actually asked him to leave it dry! So, bottom line, I'd get the NR version. It's not only cheaper, but it's one less thing to break too. ;>)
