An evil force is controlling my mind and making me want a Therapy!
My hand is reaching for my wallet..I...I...can't...stop it.
I Was going to buy a Suhr Bella for a clean pedal platform but a no good bashterd sold me a Mojave Scorpion for a super low price. Unfortunately it didnt take long for it to start sending smoke signals and now its back in the desert getting repaired.
I bought a Z-Lux and it is a spectacular pedal platform amp. However I have a 1x12 that is feeling mighty lonely and I was thinking the Therapy might be the Cure. The Bella is still a possibility but the Therapy looks like it might be a good option.
I have a Therapy sitting in my shopping cart right now. All I have to do is click the button...cant stop...cant....strength waning, resistance failing....

The Therapy is in my top two favorite amps of all time, but a clean pedal platform it is not. It takes pedals like a champ, especially if you put a 5751 in V1, but if "clean pedal platform" is your number one criteria, you probably want to look elsewhere.

Clean? Empty that cart and pull one of these off the shelf: Dr. Z EZG-50

Rockerfeller, hilarious!
Irriversal, wow, thanks, I was mistaken in my primary assumption.
Maddog, it was a tough call between the Z-Lux and the EZG. That sound still haunts me. Here's my beef, and admittedly its a minor one, thats a big box! The Therapy would sit on my cab better which is one of the many points that had me looking at it over the Bella.
Another dilemna, I heard a demo of the Route 66. Now that one is definitely not a clean amp but the dirt was sooooo amazing. Reminded me of early Clapton.
And I just got done talking myself out of that one.
Just to complicate matters Im also debating what guitar to buy, a Suhr Modern Pro Bengal, an Ernie Ball Vanentine natural, a used es-335.
the Suhr is probably mechanically superior to the others....but expensive! The Ernie Ball is ...different, and I like that! The es-335 is a classic and Ive always wanted one. Im just afraid if I bought it I would be afraid to take it out and use it.

Just not that BFTR clean like the EZG can....and as far as being afraid to put a scratch on yer new axe, just remember...it used to bother me too.... I got over it....

It's a great amp, but using it as a clean amp would depend on how loud you play. It would work for for some gigs, but since my band can get pretty loud at times, I would go to a different amp if I needed a clean amp. That said, I love this amp!!! Works great with humbuckers and single coils. My favorite amp!

I always consider pedal platform first as that way it meets the practicality criteria. It makes it easier for me to justify. However that is not my only concern. Love that with the Z-Lux I can leave the pedal board at home. I really need to play more of these. They can be hard to find which is a shame living in Cleveland. I can probably ask the guys at the factory if I can stop out and try a couple. I know they aren't really set up for that and I don't want to be disruptive. They did let me check out the Z-Lux and the EZG. I knew exactly what criteria I was looking for and made quick work of it. Two models, in and out. Youtube demos are a start but they really only tell half the story. I'm curious, what do you like about it in comparison to other amps? I assumed a 2x6l6 amp would play nice and clean until loud and some of the demos featured the clean sound.

You know what has me bothered now?
This....
Okay, I know, I'm fickle. What can I say?
Does the Route 66 really sound like that? Or is it all studio'ed up?

You can get some really good cleans with low output pups. Headroom with humbuckers is nil. The Therapy wants to get hairy pretty quick. Don't be afraid to check out the Maz 38 if you need an almost 40 watts of pedal friendly clean-ness.

I love my Therapy. I use quite a few pedals during our gigs and for my style (newer and old country, classic rock) it's awesome. I've played small rooms, big convention gigs and outdoor festival type gigs by just changing cabinets. It's got plenty of volume on tap but its always mic'ed through front of house for the bigger rooms and gigs. Lot's of punch with the bigger tubes and there is plenty of bottom end available. The Therapy tone controls work differently than any other amp I've owned. Each one seems independent of the others. If you shut all of the tone controls off the amp will be silent. The secret for me is the mid control. I use primarily Les Paul/humbucker style guitars and the mid range control gives more drive and presence above noon without getting boxy or raspy.
The thing is, I never set the amp up to try to achieve a crystal clean. I try for edge of breakup and roll the guitar volume back some. The Therapy has good articulation and you can clean up or drive by pick attack. A really nice smooth overdrive, not a hard edge distortion and all of the overdrives I've used with have worked well. Haven't tried any distortion effects because I'm not really a fan of heavy distortion and it doesn't fit my band. No effects loop which I prefer and even delay and modulation works well through the front end. I experimented with several different speakers but as Doc recommends, the Therapy matches up great with Vintage 30's, a speaker that I haven't liked with any of my other Z's.

Love my THERAPY but it is not a "clean" amp. It is a great on the edge of break up amp and on up from there.
