Found a nice deal on an excellent condition, "like-new" combo, got it for less than $1100 invested as delivered to my house. Has new tubes, a greenback, it's red so naturally it sounds better.
Help me prepare for the experience? I've owned a Carmen Ghia, Maz 18 rev, Maz 38 rev, and a Remedy, enjoyed them all. Never owned any of the Doc's ef86 circuit amps.

This amp will eat up pedals - designed specifically as a pedal platform. A lot of really nice cleans. Doc had some mods that would turn it into a "baby Stangray" for Steve Miller.

A lot of folks have said they noticed a big difference when swapping out the EF86 for something NOS. It's there, but I had to listen to hear the difference between the Winged C and the Dario Miniwatt. When I changed the power tubes, however, it made an immediately apparent difference. Most people seem to prefer the JJs for a traditional EL84 sound; they were too compressed for my taste. My personal favorites are the EHXs; they are more open to my ear.
All that to say, if you find you're not getting along with it, try some different tubes.

The amp came with eh el84's and when one went i just put another matched set back in there. Came with a jj 5y3 that I have never replaced. Changed the stock winged c ef86 with an amperex bugle boy, and replaced the sovtek 12ax7 with a genalex gold lion. I did notice a difference changing the ef86. To me seems to sound a little "warmer" maybe?? The winged c developed a rattle. That's the only reason why I changed it.
