I have terrific amps for cleans. My ZWreck sounds great with single coils, almost as good with humbuckers, but I have peered into iher and haven't quite found the darkness for which I have been searching. I'm hopeful that a Route 66 will make for a good contrast when I need another sound. Honestly, every other amp, room and most of my mics are fairly bright, so I think it would be a good move (yes, keeping the ZWreck.)
How is the sustain? Distortion? Darker cleans?
What say y'all?
Thanks!

Funny, I am in the exact opposite situation having used my Route 66 for a few years and being a bit annoyed that I can't make a jangle-clean 'Fender' Surf recording sound in my home studio! I can make my most important sound though: Thick and sustaining transparent, pick sensitive Blues tones using a few low gain pedals. You will never get that sound with a Fender amp.
I can really recommend the 66 for great thick and full sounds with lots of sustain. I wouldn't call it 'dark' but it is certainly no Deluxe Reverb. I have been through a Deluxe Reverb phase (first a Fender reissue, then a Cowtipper 22 Pro which is a great amp and everything the Fender isn't) but I got really tired of the mid-dip fixed equalization tone of Fender amps and moved to the 66 which is all midrange - glorious midrange!
You will need a power brake to get it into distortion as it is properly loud. I have just bought an AirBrake and will be testing it tomorrow - I have a small studio and to get the 66 up to a great sounding tone is just too loud.

Thank you, Jim. This is helpful. It seems that every amp innmy arsenal can do something in the Fender to Vox+. The base that isn't covered is the place that isn't spiky.
I tried some darker tubes in my THD Flexi, but it was a bit like trying to drink out of a paper straw. That was the closest I got to the idea.
Definitely leaning toward the 66. I love golds, but Not sure that's the direction I will want to go.

I posted a video in the is it real? Thread. Yes, the video gives me motion sickness! But the tone is the tone I am after. Hence the title of the thread. If that is the native tone of the amp I have to have one. According to posters, asside from the studio delay and verb, it is pretty much what the amp sounds like.

I saw that. Thank you for posting it. Next time I listen, I'll block half or all the screen It does sound good enough for me to play my LP more. I will try to get a chance to play through one before I take the leap.

DC here!
I have borth the Route66 with the 2x10" cab (removable backplate) and the Z-Wreck combo - they are two very different sounding amps
Excellent sounding with all my guitars to my ears at least.
Route66 is not dark sounding it has what I would say is a very smokey sexy sound Fantastic projection and soundscape that seems to fit into the mix effortlessly.
The Z-Wreck is much more jangly certainly brighter its dirt sound is more aggressive remainds me a bit of Brian Mays sound in Queen.
Cleans in the amps are simmilar in projection and soundscape to me But occupies different frequency spectrums
Cheers: Dixiechicken!

It's probably my next purchase, but I'll likely get a surf green one when I manage to set aside the money for it.

Also check out the DB4. Pairs nice with a ZWreck. It is darker and more rock sounding.

Mods, hope I'm not outa line here but I have a friend in the Pueblo Colorado area that has had a Rt 66 head for some time that has gone unplayed because his MAZ 18 is a better fit for him and his strats. If anyone would like to start a line of communication with him PM me here on Ztalk and I will play ambassador of hookups. Again, please feel free to delete me if I am violating any rules....

I will play ambassador of hookups. Again, please feel free to delete me if I am violating any rules.... 1. Won't touch it.., but its tempting 2. What rules would you be violating for brokering an amp sale amongst Z players. I would prefer to buy and sell equipment with a reputable group like the folks at Z-Talk.
