Hello everyone,
Has anyone ever tried the Dr Z 4x10 w/ the Emi Legend 1028K's with either an EZG? If so, what did you think? More American sounding than with the Z 10's? I had, at different times, two EZG's with the same Z 4x10 cab(Z 10's). It sounded great but, to me, was missing some of those bouncing, sparkling Fendery cleans that I love. Not sure if it was the Z 10's or just me.
I'm itching for another EZG now that I just saw that the Emi Legends are now an option (new news to me). After I sold the EZG I bought an Avatar 4x10 with Cel Golds. I wish I could have tried it through that cab.
Thanks, Joe

The short answer is no, however I have been doing some messing around with speaker swapping, just for nerdly good fun, and tried the 1028 with my Mojave Scorpion (Marshall Family) and my Ceriatone DZ30 (Vox Family) and it sounded spectacular with both. In fact I liked it better than the Celestion 75 watt Creamback, the Eminence Swamp Thang or the Private Jack. While we are on the subject another speaker I can recommend trying is the Lil Texas. It is a NEO speaker very much in the same family as the 1028. I put one in my DR and love it!

Happy Labor Day weekend everyone!! Well after a year plus dragging my knuckles I'm finally back in the EZG club!
After having an '07 black head/4x10 that I foolishly sold way back, I've always wanted a Blonde head with a black panel/oval along with the 4x10 - especially with the new Z legend 10 speaker option that I saw listed on the Z sight.
As I saw here on the forum, after the discontinuation of red and blonde, the good doctor was selling his left over stock of cabs and head shells in those colors. Not having an EZG, I figured I'd better jump on this last opportunity while available. I was able to snag my dream color setup (head shell & 4x10) and I'd worry about a head later.
I was able to snag a used EZG. It came in, I of course played it before swapping head shells and it was exactly what *I* felt was looking for. As good as the stock Z 10's are, the alnico Z legend pushed it right into vintage super reverb territory.

I had taken a break from the Legends for a few months and got back to them to give them a try again. Just wish they could handle a tad more bass. Sometimes I think my perfect speaker would be 80% Legend and 20% Z10 for just a bit more clarity and firmness in the bass.

I remember you invested a lot of time, energy and $$$ on the comparisons. I'm real happy so far. The cab sounds incredible work my Pure 64 head. That amp is more bouncy and a rounder blackface where the EZG is a little more immediate with that El Mocambo type thing going on. On the Z site I believe they dropped the "1028K" from the description and just refer to them as the Z legend so I'm not sure if they changed the spec any? I noticed that after I ordered them. I may ask about them I when I inquire about sending it in for a check over /TLC the and bass mod as I'm still curious what the "current voicing" that is mentioned with the bass mod? It sounds good as is. The previous owner thought it was the latest that already has the mod from the factory but it had a head shell with the oval and I believe the change came after they changed the cosmetics of the front panels to more of a Fendery look? Also two of the PEM nuts that hold the chassis are knocked out/stripped. This is common when someone gets over zealous tightening down to this style of nut. Probably need to put a Tinnerman style nut in there.

Also two of the PEM nuts that hold the chassis are knocked out/stripped. This is common when someone gets over zealous tightening down to this style of nut. Probably need to put a Tinnerman style nut in there. I can't seem to settle on one speaker for everything I play. I like a clean spanky sound for some funk and clean blues like SRV's Lenny and Doobie Brothers Long Train Running and the Legends are marginal for that while the Z10's are awesome for that. The Legends 1028k's are a compromise in this area. They really don't do a good clean. But man I do love them for medium to moderate overdriven blues sounds. I love the light weight. Makes the 4x10 easier to move around. I think I'm going to try one more set of speakers. I want to try the Eminence 1058's. They handle more watts and Eminence says "Fatter Legend 1028K tone with more depth." That sounds exactly like what I want. But I'm not sure I can trust Eminence descriptions because they also describe the 1028k's as having tight percussive lows. I wouldn't describe my set as "tight" in the low area. I wondered if the legends from Dr. Z were exactly the same as those from Eminence. I didn't see anything to make me think they were saying they were proprietary so I was thinking they'd be the same. I'd like to know for sure. I also can't make up my mind on the bass reduction mod to the EZG-50. I have the parts to do the mod but keep going back and forth on whether I want it. When I play the Eminence Legends I think I want it because I HAVE to keep to keep the bass all the way down and for some reason that bugs me. But when I play with Celestion Alnico Gold's or the Z10's I can turn up the bass and I think yea that's kinda nice to have some more bass. Plus a buddy of mine keeps telling me I'm too trebly and to turn up the bass so that makes me think I don't want the mod. I'm starting to not trust my ear which is not good. I'm thinking any EZG-50 with the oval front probably original circuit and predates the bass mod going into production. But I can't remember if I'm just imaginging that or if I did hear that at one point. Dr. Z would know or sure.

Hey Patrick,
It's been a while. New job is kicking my butt!!
Did you ever get the 1058's? I've been thinking of getting them in a 4x10 for my 100 watt blackface head. It would probably be pushing it with my Z with the Z legends which I believe was only 20 watts each.
Some days I love my Avatar 4x10 with golds with it and some days I'm wanting a more American speaker for a huge Pure SR type tone.

Yes, I got four Eminence 1058's. I really like them. It's been a few weeks since I've played them as I'm currently spending time with my Fender Vibroverb clone that I just built! Another story. I could definitely live with the 1058's. They did turn out to be somewhat in between the Eminence 1028's and the Z10's. I can recommend them. Just know that despite all the speakers that I've gone through lately I'm no expert and it's hard to describe them in words so I would hate to steer you wrong. I have several 4x10 cabs loaded right now and as I said I've not been playing any of them but if I needed one to go with my EZG-50 head the 1058's might very well be my go to right now.

I feel obligated to follow up regarding the Eminence Legend 1028k speakers. I've talked about them here and elsewhere and I've mentioned how I sorta liked them but had issues with them staying clean and was getting low frequency distortion which was minimized when turning down the bass but never quite went away. It turned out I had 1 bad speaker out of 4. I was removing them from a cabinet and it occurred to me to do a little test for speaker coil rubbing by pressing in on the cone and one was really bad. It was really crunchy when pressing in on the cone. I think I had this problem from the very beginning with this one speaker as I bought them new and was careful with installation. And since I was always using these in 4x10 and the other 3 were fine it wasn't so bad that I realized it was something defective. I thought it was just the nature of the speakers. I sent the speaker to Eminence and they quickly sent me a new speaker and I'm loving these speakers now. But I haven't played them with the EZG-50 yet as I currently have them in a 1965 Fender Super Reverb. I know they will be great with the EZG-50 when I get around to trying that. I kinda always wondered if maybe there was something wrong but just wasn't experienced enough to realize/detect it.
On another sorta related subject I think I have a Dr. Z 10" speaker (also built by Eminence) with the same coil rubbing problem. I bought a brand new Dr. Z 2x10 cabinet from Humbucker with Dr. Z 10" speakers and one of the 2 speakers had this same issue with low frequency distortion. I replaced it with another Dr. Z 10" speaker from a set of 4 that I currently weren't using at the time and that fixed the problem and I kinda forgot/kept putting off dealing with it. But I need to see about getting this Dr. Z 10" speaker replaced also.

I am still digging my new Z 4x10 with the Z Legends with the EZG. I want to slim down to a couple of amps and I'm now thinking of getting another Z 4x10 W/ Z Legends (in black) to use with my Pure 64 50 watt head and get rid of some 2x12's.
