Will a NOS Mullard rectifier tube really change the tone in a Maz 18 NR? If not, then what is all the hype around an expensive NOS lets Mullard from the late 60s? Is there other reasons to buy and use such a tube???

It won't change the tone , it may possibly change the "feel" a touch. But the hype around NOS rectifier tubes is they last for years , decades sometimes. Newer ones seem to last anywhere from 6 months to , if you're lucky , a few years.

I did score a NOS Mullard (Labeled RCA) made in Great Britian 5AR4/GZ34 locally in the original box for 30 bucks...saw them on ebay for 80.00 plus. Tube tested like new so I was told. I'll give her a try tonight.

Tested her out tonight as many mentioned, not sure if I can tell a difference a low or high volumes. Maybe just a very touch of smoother tone?? This is a tough one but I guess I am glad I bought it seeing as so many of you have mentioned the NOS rectifier tubes will last forever compare to CP ones.

I usually find that the NOS rectifier tubes, Mullard in particular, will sound "feel" a little tighter and punchy. Or a bit more headroom put another way. And yes I've seen them last for decades. Probably last rectifier you'll ever have to by for that amp.

I've been able to snag a small army of used but certainly not used up Mullard GZ34's from dead amps over the years. Every amp I put them in makes them sound better. Doesn't change the tone much, but everything seems to fall into place better. Remember, the rectifier tube is part of the power supply section and those old Mullards just do it right.

It all depends on how close in voltage your old tube was producing vs the mullard. Most of the new tubes are very variable in the actual voltage they produce, whereas the mullards are more uniform. You’re buying reliability, not necessarily tone since all a rectifier does is work in the power section of the amp.

No, it won't change the tone. Well, maybe in a way. If you really push the amp there may be a difference in the way it distorts and that affects the harmonics.
Also, reliability affects tone, if you consider that when a rectifier fails you have no tone at all.
