Hi all!
i've been a happy owner of a MazJr for about two years now. I've always liked the full, detailed clean sound (and moderate overdrive) especially with my strats. The only thing that I wish is that it would have more gain, not much, but some. I know that the pedals would be the answer but I feel that even qualilty pedals supresses the amps wonderful dynamics. Has anyone any hints how to increase gain without any gadgets between guitar and the amp? The trick I've tried so far are: - Attenuator between the amp and the speaker- better but still not enough gain - Different rectifier tube - don't remember the type but anyway the one recommended by this board - not much effect, more gain needed - high gain pre-amp tube - the amp came with JJ EL-84:s and I've heard that they are about the highest gain El-84:s available..? Any other type/brand I should try?
Are there any other ways to get more gain from MazJr? Thanks in advance!
Pardon my english, I'm from Finland...
rgds, Jamo

Slight correction...
"high gain pre-amp tube - the amp came with JJ EL-84:s and I've heard that they are about the highest gain El-84:s available..? Any other type/brand I should try?"
EL84's are your power tubes, 12AX7's, 5751's and 12AT7's (mainly used in reverb models) are your preamp tubes. The 12AX7 is as "high gain" as your going to get with a gain of 100.
Which model do you have 'Verb or NR? The NR has more "gain".
The other thing you could do is to get some higher rated GT EL84's. The Dr. ships the Maz's with GTEL84's with a rating of #6. The higher the rating the earlier the break up.

I would be happy to pick you out a very high gain V1 and V2 in the same ECC83S tubes that the Doc uses. www.groovetubes.com/product.cfm?Product_ID=1737This also comes with a 12AX7M for the phase inverter that is matched on the two sides. These MHG kits work great in the MAZ Jr and Sr. Gain does not come from the output tubes.

oops, sorry I meant of course 12Ax7:s as pre-amp tube. I've heard that JJ:s are the most probable brand to have gain in around 100 with quite small variation from tube to tube. I've understood that in other brands the gain may vary from 60 to 100.
Myles, your proposal is very interesting, perhaps I'll give it a try.
My MazJr is NR. My favorite settings with volume/master are 3 a'clock and 12 a'clock. You can get some more gain with higher setting but I like the clarity with these settings.
Thanks guys for your comments!

Lefy, are you sure about that? i always thought the LOWER the power tube rating the earlier the breakup. in fact i am sure i have some el84 groove tubes rated at "4" and they are more overdriven than higher rated tubes. you aure about this?

The Maz amps aren't cascading tube high gain amps. You can't make that amp into a high gain amp no matter what you do without pedals. Especially if you don't dime the preamp volume. Your search begins with trying to find the right boost/overdrive/ distortion pedal if you want a virtual 2 channel amp (clean/dirty).
