No circuit mod was done when we started using 12AX7 in V2. V1 was always a 12AX7. There is a bit of a hollow sound from the 5751 do to it's lower amount of mid range, which is a cleaner less driven sound. Your right the supply of JAN 5751's has all but dried up.
I kind of like the 12AX7 in V2 makes the Ghia a bit more lively. Either way they are drop in compatible. If you look for a 5751, the RCA Black plate Command Series are the best sounding IMHO. But the supply of GE JAN 5751 is much more available and sound very nice.
BTW that is great looking Ghia set.

Wow, thanks Doc! Ask and ye shall receive. That explains it then. So I'll go with the 5751 in V1, keep the 12AX7 in V2, and if that doesn't do it I'll think about the 5V4 rectifier that you've mentioned before. Like you pointed out a while back, it's not supposed to be a Twin Reverb (I have bigger Z amps for that), but I personally like things in my Ghias just a little bit tighter. Having said that though, the 10" Red Fang in that little cab probably makes more difference than tube swaps ever will. Talk about a wolf in sheep's clothing!
Thanks for the kind words on the set-I kinda thought so too and that's part of why I couldn't resist it even though I have other Ghias.

There is a bit of a hollow sound from the 5751 do to it's lower amount of mid range, which is a cleaner less driven sound. This must be why I love my Ghia with a 5751 in the V2 position! Understandably some like it with a little more push or liveliness (as Doc does); however I prefer the more scoopy feel of the reduced mids. Side note: another great amp, the Z-28, also uses a 5751 in its phase-inverter position (also V2 on that amp). Not sure why I bring this up here... but nonetheless, there you have it.

Z fasteddie, I think you mean to say 5751 in V2...not V1? Doc says in the second sentence that "V1 was always a 12AX7"... I can say this for sure, the Ghia is the most sensitive circuit I know of when it comes to tube (and speaker) changes. I can really tell the difference whenever I change a tube in it. Great amp. Plus with you having two Ghias you can compare easily.

I swapped V2 for a 12AX7 a number of years back wanting to see if it might give a little more gain. As I recall, I didn't notice much difference and decided to go with the 5751 as the good doctor spec'd it at the time. I would also note that I don't have the most sensitive ears. If it sounds good, I'm good. Arguably, the Ghia sounded good both ways. Now this thread has me thinking about what kind of 5751 I have in there. My gut says I swapped the pre-amp tubes at some point. Maybe my ears aren't that bad, because I do recall swapping 5751s into my Marshall years ago and really liking the more focused sound. Those were the real deal mil stnd tubes. After an older engineer found out I was using a tube guitar amp, he asked whether I wanted his old box of tubes. Maybe I have some money sitting in that box in the basement.

Yes, V1 was always and remains a 12AX7 from the factory while up until a few years ago V2 was a 5751. BUT, there has been a bit of a move afoot (again it seems in the last couple of years) to reverse the positions. That is to say putting the 5751 in V1 and keeping (or putting) the 12AX7 in V2. The Doc even mentioned it a couple of times in previous threads, and this is what had me scratching my head a bit. If you do a search in the Ghia section for "5751" all of these threads will pop up. But truth be told I'm pretty much in the same boat as GuitarZ. My ears aren't golden either, but I just wanted to try to get it right.

Oh, my confusion...sorry! I thought you meant the other way 'round. It's all good, either way. I've tried all combinations of 12AX7 and 5751 possible, and I love the varied sounds that can be created.
