Hi folks, this is my first post in the forum b/c I just bought a Therapy head. Questions: 1. The Therapy can use only one speaker jack. Can I use a Y cable with two 8 ohm cabs plugged into the 4 ohm jack? 2. Has anyone experimented with 6V6 power tubes in the Therapy; any recommendations? thanks

1. Yes 2. Love 'em. KT77's and 6V6's are my favorite for the Therapy. The 6V6's bring down the output quite a bit, and bring in all of that saggy, spongy goodness people love about them. Really sounds like a nice Tweed Deluxe/Z28. Go with TAD 6V6's.

Thanks. I've heard good things about the TAD 6V6s too. Can't wait to try 'em. Haven't even gotten the amp yet. Delivery tomorrow.

Irreversal - you anticipated my next question: how about the 5751? I think the gain factor is about 70%, correct? I have a Rivera that barks and roars too easily so I was considering this tube in V1 for that amp, but I read that Dr. Z biases the Therapy cold so I wasn't sure if the 5751 would be ok for V1. Also, according Dr. Z's tube info section, he recommends a Ruby 12AX7 AC5 HG+ for V2. From what I've read, that tube is used mostly in a V1 position. Anyone experiment with this tube in V2? Also, Ruby has a 12AX7AC7 HG+, their latest offering in that class of tube. Any one try that?
open to all for suggestions and trials

Never had a big urge to swap out tubes with the Therapy. I would not mind trying a 5751, thought I had one somewhere......

I play humbuckers mainly, so I can liken it to plugging into the lo vs the hi input on the Maz amps. I've had no issues using the 5751 in V1. My Therapy came with the Ruby in V1 and a JJ in V2. I couldn't get those out fast enough. I ran a Mullard in V1 for a while, but it was very picky about fuzz pedals and would mush out pretty early. I went to the 5751 and it's just about perfect, still a great deal of preamp gain can be had and fuzz pedals just meld right into the front of the amp. I use a balanced Sovtek LPS in V2, and with the 6V6's, they overdrive very nicely.

Interesting, although I use single coils mostly and no distortion. My idea for using the 5751 was to tame the front end so I can get absolutely clean. Nevertheless, if I ever have to use a stomp-box in a cover band, then I'm glad to know the 5751 works well in conjunction with a dist. pedal. Regarding the Ruby HG+ in V2, maybe I'll email Dr. Z and ask what the rational is. I'm not even sure how V2 functions in this amp.
The plight of a gear-head tone-freak - decisions, decisions, decisions . . .

I've yet to try the Gain Changer. I've been so happy with my Direct Drive & Small Fry that another overdrive pedal would...*honestly, no more room on the pedalboard is my excuse

Welcome to the forum SukeyTawdry , I am a proud Therapy owner, and it is the best Dr. Z amp I've had, and probably the amp period, for me anyway. I also like to try and swap different tubes. I have a pair of TAD 6L6's in mine now but I wanted to try 6V6 as well. I have a 5751 in V1 (not NOS, a JJ and I like it) I play mostly humbuckers and wanted to get a bit more headroom out of the amp so the 5751 fits well. Also I may add that I am currently running a NOS 5U4 rectifier in mine. Not a huge difference, but in the feel a little bit. I've also been curious about the Barber Gain changer for a while, but I recently bought a Xotic BB + and I'm very happy with both sides of the pedal. This amp paired with a 1x12 cab with a V30 is giving me my best guitar tone ever (again imo)

Thanks Fabio. I'm still not sure what 5ar4s I'm gonna try. I'm open to suggestions on that one too.

Thanks Fabio. I'm still not sure what 5ar4s I'm gonna try. I'm open to suggestions on that one too. Yea, in general rectifiers won't affect the tone THAT much, but with 5AR4 (GZ34, same thing) you'll have a bit stiffer response and with a 5U4 a bit spongier, depending on what tone you are going for. So it is fun to try them and see/hear what you prefer.

Right. I was going to ask that question too. This will be my first tube-rectified amp. I was speculating about the 5Y3 too.

You're going to love it. I just had an hour or so of intense Therapy this morning, and I'm feelin' fine! I went round with tubes too, and for me the stock as-shipped tubes are back in it. Love the 6V6 feel too, but that itch gets scratched by my Z-Lux. The Therapy is my only big bottle amp anymore, and I dig mine.

I'm glad to hear that I'll love the Therapy. This is my first Z, but I did do my research, and I found a used one for a good price. If money weren't an issue, I'd have gotten a new Z-Lux. IMHO, a real amp has reverb and trem, but I do plan to buy a Strymon Flint for the Therapy.
