I was tracking drums last weekend and the playback was horrible(not cause of my playing,i swear! )heavy distortion on kick, snare and one overhead.I ran through some tests and found thankfully the only problem I have is 3 static-y xlr cables. They are pretty cheap, about 5 years old from a MF mic bundle, but I never had a problem, and then just bad out of nowhere. Is this usual?granted, they are cheap and I got my money's worth, and thankfully it's not the interface or mics, but idk why they would crap out like that.I tried some de oxit, but still no good.

I've had mic cables get static-y and go bad. Todd probably knows the truth, but what I think I was told happens is, as they get used, dragged on the floor, coiled, stepped on, the insulation and wires inside move a bit, the outside material comes in contact with other materials and they develop some static charge. Also you start to get small breaks in the shield wires that cause them to deteriorate. My experience is with cables that are used on stages at gigs, where they get rougher treatment than those in a studio, so your problem might be something else.

Before you cut them up and turn them into ties for your new cables, try a little DeOxit on both ends - it can't hurt.

My problem was old cables plus the kitty cat nibbling on them. I finally picked up a behringer cable tester. It's a good tool to take the guess work out of 'maybe bad' vs 'maybe good'. Plus, it's fun to watch the lights light up. www.amazon.com/Behringer-CT100-BEHRINGER/dp/B000CCIVCA

I've had one of these testers for years. Always in the "second" gig bag, a/k/a the "trouble bag." It's the one with fuses, tubes, the EHX power amp in a pedal, etc. (In the unlikely event you're curious about the "first" gig bag, it's got the bits needed to set up, such as guitar cables, mic and cable, AC cord, small box with picks, capo and slide, and so forth.)

The testers are real nice because you can use them to help isolate where your problem is too.
Good tool for the gig bag
