Hello I'm wondering which 12ax7 tubes would be a good choice for my CG. Right now I have a tung-sol in v1 and jj in v2. Thanks

It's personal choice. It would be best if you could get your hands on a few, and have a friend swap them out without telling you which is which. Let your ears decide.
And is there anything wrong with your tong-sol? Just looking for something different?

The CG is probably one of the most sensitive amps I have in regards to tube and speaker choice. It's chameleon-like in how it changes. I like what John suggests about swapping them without knowing which is which. All too often we adjust our gear with our eyes instead of with our ears. I do it all the time.

The good Doc himself had recommended to me an NOS RCA Blackplate for V1. Pricey, but smooth. You could save a few bucks if you go ANOS...
The Tung-Sol or JJ would be fine for V2.

Thank for the help. I'm not for sure but I believe I may have a preamp tube going bad. With the volume up a bit I'm hearing a noise on some notes. I replaced the power tubes but that didnt help. I have not changed the preamp tubes since I had it so I thought I would give that a try.

Well I always ran a JJ ECC83 in V1 and a NOS 5751 in V2. If the overtone sounds like a ring mod and tubes don't fix it...I'd consider a filter capacitor could need replaced. But most amp issues are tube related. The Dr. Z website has a suggested tube list HERE

Needless to say he picked out the expensive NOS RCA! This last Ghia I bought is magical, I am afraid to change anything because it sounds soooo good. It has some real Dr Z MOJO going on. Todd

I have an EI ECC83 in V1 on the Doc's recommendation. It rocks! NOS 5751 in V2, and a pair of NOS Tesla EL-84s right now too. I ran it through a Kustom 410 cab cranked up a few days ago and wow.

I have been running the EH12AX7 in V1, and the EH12AY7 in V2, and it's the best I've tried for clean headroom without sacrificing too much volume. Rugged, quiet, clear tubes that work, for me of course, everyone hears differently.
