Hey all, Still very interested in direct confrontations between Cure and Z-Lux. Still loving my Z-Lux (best amp I have ever had), but also still frustrated to have it running in half power mode + Brakelite on 4 (sometimes 3) most of the time... I still think there's more overlap between the Cure and Therapy than the Cure and Z Lux, but that's just me. I could see owning both the Cure and Z Lux, while if you owned a Therapy and getting good overdrive at reasonable volume was an issue, the Cure would be right in your wheelhouse...

I had the Z-Lux and when I did I ran it at 40 watts all the time. No doubt about it one of the best if not the best amps the Doc ever made IMHO. Both amps have there unique features.I hardly ever used the trem on the Z-Lux. And only used a touch of reverb on the Z-Lux. The level control on the Cure is such a cool feature it really is a game changer. I can get the Cure to sound pretty close at least close enough for me to the Z-lux and it also has plenty of headroom and power which really surprised me being that I played the Z-lux at 40 watts all the time. I say that comparing it to the Z-lux. I was worried that the Cure would not be loud enough in my Church but It hangs tough. The Z-lux is more pristine and lush sounding and pretty much blackface Fender type of tone. The Cure can do the blackface thing and get the tweed tones and Marshall thing as well. The overdrive of the Cure has a tad bit more gain. They both can get a sweet crunchy overdrive slightly broken up tone. They are both great amps. I bought the Cure as a grab and go amp. Its great at home and also live.

Thanks a lot to you two for theses explanations. Actually I had a Therapy just before the Z-Lux and I liked its overdrive sounds very much. I couldn't do a direct comparison with the Z-Lux, but I think I prefer the Z-Lux' voice and I also really like its reverb and tremolo. But I keep wondering about the Cure! If only I could play one here in Paris, but there's none. Faze, what made you use the 40W mode most of the time on the Z-Lux? Cheers guys!

We play loud in our church. The clean headroom in the 40 watt setting also was another reason. When I use the Cure I have it maxed out. I need a big clean sound and the 40 watt setting would give me that. The Cure maxed out does have some break up in it but I roll back my volume. Then when I play lead lines just roll back up.

If you are used to the 20 watt setting all you would really need is the strymon flint which has reverb and trem on it. That with the Cure would probably get you as close to the Z-Lux as possible. The Cure is a loud 15 watts I believe the Doc said it's actually 19 watts. With the level control you would not need a brake light.

So then power would be about the same, speaker exactly the same, trem and verb covered. It remains to larger cabinet and Brakelite vs smaller cabinet and level pot...

As some of you may know, I pulled the trigger and bought a Cure. I've only had a few minutes with it last week and I'm really anxious to compare it to my Z-Lux (best amp etc. ) The pleasure has no end! I've been cured of my chronical amp gas... but infected by an even worse chronicle Z amp gas I can't control.

It's been very hot here in Paris these days and I can't really play electric guitars without having all the windows closed (my neighbors never complained yet – I want to maintain things that way!) so I'm quite frustrated not playing my new Cure for the moment.
Had half an hour with it tonight and it already seem to sound more open and creamy than my first try a few days ago. It's a really nice amp for sure and very easy to use at low volume thanks to the already famous level control.
I love my wife and kids, I like my job... But I want a whole week end alone with my guitars, Cure, Z-Lux and a few pedals! ;-)

My Z-LUX isn't going anywhere. Recently sold my '65 Deluxe. My Z-Lux isn't going anywhere either. Well, except maybe to the old folks home with me!

Hi guys, I play my new Cure in front of my Z-Lux for the last few weeks. The overdrive sounds of the Cure, its thickness and its really usable level control are growing on me. I think the speaker has already became softer (even if it had never been stiff ) The Cure is definitely a great amp and it probably fits my needs better than the Z-Lux... But anyway, I still have a real preference for the Lux, which remains the best amp I have ever played yet. I'm not in a hurry, so I'll take at least the month of July to make a decision, but if I had to decide now and despite the great great qualities of the Cure, I'd go Z-Lux.

Cure arrived today. I need to decide whether to go with it or the Z-Lux for tomorrow's gig, so I likely will have something a bit informed to say on the thread topic soon. any update on this subject? I would love to know if the cure sounds the same tonally as the Z Lux (minus verb and trem).

I know this is an old thread but can you describe in more detail how the these 2 amps base tone compares? Is the Z Lux sweeter and have more sparkling highs? Which one did you keep and/or prefer in the end?
