Really have it dialed in perfectly now. Just went through a tune-up with a brilliant local tech. NOS Russian 6n14n matched quad (thanks Perry). Westinghouse labeled Mullard Blackburn GZ34 (thanks again Perry). Preamp tubes: NOS Siemens ECC83 medium plate in V1 (thanks yet again, Perry). NOS Dario Miniwatt EF86 in V2. NOS Ei ECC83 with balanced triodes in the PI slot. The NOS Siemens is "the $hit" when it comes to making an EL84-based platform articulate and punchy at the same time. Amp is loaded with a Scumback 65w M75. This RxES with those tubes runs practically dead silent at idle - at nearly full volume. The Russian power tubes and Scumback are stout and present, but there is absolutely no high-end fizziness or sizzle. None. Rehearsed with my band last night on a large soundstage at a local studio. Sounded KILLER; had it up to about 1/4 - 1/3 on the volume dial. Goosed the front end with an old and trusty FDII; also ran an ancient MIJ Boss CE-2 Chorus. Lava Cable Ultramafic and Tweed cables; George L's between the couple pedals. Rockin'. MUCH more leaning toward the Marshall camp than the Vox camp as it is currently set up. Dig it.

Great looking amp! I have one of the Tracii Guns' Prescriptions loaded with a 1X12 Gold - glorious sound from it!

Great looking amp! I have one of the Tracii Guns' Prescriptions loaded with a 1X12 Gold - glorious sound from it! Yeah, cool amp. A real easy-to-carry little rig! Love the fact that the Scumback is 97 db; really mellows out the amp. All the old tubes really help the amp have an uber-low noise floor.

Your volume knob is to low.... Hmmmm ... no wonder the noise floor was so low at idle.

Do you run it with the Overdose engaged or off? I notice I change mine depending on the type of music I am playing. I wish Overdose had a level knob on it like the boost switch on the Z-Lux. Have you ever connected it to a shorty 2x10 cab? Amazing! David

Have you ever connected it to a shorty 2x10 cab? Amazing! David David: I have not used the Overdose for about 3 years now. Since I front it with my old FD II, it's like having two separate boost stages simply by using that pedal. I have not connected it to another cab. I like the fact that it is a simple grab & go for me.

You sir, have yourself one fantastic piece of equipment right there. Congrats. Thanks. I may look for either a second RxES 1x12 or seek one in a head format that I could team with a convertible Z 1x12 cab.

those NOS Tubes are worth every penny they cost, and they really can make HUGE tonal differences, Ive always wanted to try an RX ES!! but always been gunshy of the bright Twangyness I have hear they are known for, Would rather it be All Marshall like yours sounds like it is.

I'm late getting back to the party - sorry about that Jamie. Here is how I do it..... The Scumback M75 runs at 97db and has the character of an old Greenback. Thus, the speaker alone softens the sound and brings the volume down a touch. Next, running the old GZ34 really tightens up the low end. Using all NOS/ANOS preamp tubes takes away a lot of the grittiness (not glassiness - but grittiness). Thus, with everything I have going on, it really isn't in the least bit Twangy. Rather - much more toward the Marshall camp - even with an EF86 running ( I have 5 or 6 different NOS EF86s to choose from and they all sound quite different). Lastly - I just sent it into the Z crew for a once-over. Z himself worked on it and it came back sounding just pristine. Runs very very quiet and just sounds really nice - especially with the complement of tubes I am running - plus I think the Scumback has a huge influence on the sound overall. When I kick in both stages of my FD II, the amp retains its definition but is definitely overdriven and Marshally sounding. I'm currently seeking a second RxES. Dig it. I have actually thought about asking Mike Z if they would make me a 1x12 combo in red.
