Can I get the Angus AC/DC grind from a Maz JR with HB's or P90's? Will I need pedals to achieve enough of the gain needed?

if by grind you mean great crunchy overdrive tones, then yes. it will not do the mesa boogie preamp thing though. also, the amp has to be really cranked on the master and volume/gain to get that sound, but it will do it. that's why i use an airbrake.

I get it like this: Tonebone Classic with the Maz Juniors master full up or half up depending on the time of day or night, and the pre about 9:00-11:00 on der dialage. treble @ about 9:00, mid-12:00, bass-12:15, cut-10:00 and a little verb for the room. Thats using my Guild Bluesbird with stock Duncan 59's in it. My PRS custom 22 is a little tone knob change but whipps it out just the same. Then push it into a clear and clean and fat ; lead tone with a Blues Driver.......Again just my .02 worth...... oh ya.....with a few Tonebone tweaks even ol Warren haynes and Mr. billy Gibbons would be well pleased..... ah how how how

Yes you can! With P90s or Humbuckers: Treble on 0, Mids on Full, Bass on Full, volume on Full, Master at whatever the room calls for. Try the tone controls this way and see what you get.

You should be able to do that and more, without pedals. Angus dont use no stinkin' pedals, you don't need no stinkin' pedals ;D
Actually compared to some rock stuff, AC/DC is not very gainy at all. It's a decent tube amp pushing some air, powered by some very toneful hands!
Have fun!

That's true! But another part of the equation might be the guitar. If you're thinking about Malcom's tone, you gotta remember that he uses a SEMI-HOLLOW gretch with just the bridge pickup (there's not even a neck PU in his guitar--there's just a hole!). I have found that I can dial in this crunch tone with my ASAT SH on the bridge pu--no matter what I plug into. But I'll report on the Maz tomorrow because that's when I'm scheduled to receive it! ;D You should be able to do that and more, without pedals.
