Dave stopped by the shop yesterday so we figured it was time to give everyone a listen. Here's a quick run through of the new Cure amp shot on Dave's iPhone 7.
The Cure is like a "Z-Lux Jr." All the tone you need, without any superfluous features. A compact, ready to go, sweet sounding package. 20 watts of 6V6 power, global level control, TMB EQ controls, master volume and gain. Features an effects loop and variable boost footswitch. Eminence Z12 speaker, just like the Z-Lux.
The heart of the amp is a handwound Triad Magnetics output transformer, made by the same company that did all the classic tweed amps of the 50s. Great for the guitarist on the go. Having had a couple runs through it myself, it really excels at delivering "blackface" spanky cleans, but goes into creamy, smooth overdrive, much like a tweed. Best in both worlds in my opinion.
It's going to be open to dealers this month, so expect to see it in stores soon at an extremely low price of $1299. Z went out of this way this time to maintain the build quality and tone we are known for but keep the price point as low as possible, so those that want a Dr. Z but don't have deep pockets could still afford a professional amp. Professional tone at an entry level price was the goal. This is great for those that want the absurdly popular Z-Lux tone but don't have the scratch for the full tremolo/reverb 40 watt package. In my opinion, as someone who doesn't need on board reverb or trem, this is the way to go. Don't forget you can always add those sounds (and more) to the effects loop.
Onto Dave's demo:

Man o' man. A Fender Deluxe Reverb RI goes for $1,100. For $200 more a guy can have a "Z" that will kick it's little Tolex butt. That ought to be a no-brainer. They won't be able to make them fast enough.
One other thing. Doc has surely got to be the most prolific engineer in the history of guitar amplifiers. I can't think of anyone else who has come up with as many different original designs. Sorry Leo.

Well, slap me silly and call me Susan!!! A "Z-Lux Jr." Dang it, that 40 W power section and full set of 4 6V6's was the only thing holding me back from a real-deal Z-Lux. (Would never use that kind of power.) I've just spent my latest batch of fun-money, Doc... why do you do this to me? Why???

I think this is a crucial point to make. (I didn't know DRRI's went for this much. I would have guessed $600-700) You'll never convert the old die-hard Fender folks that want that 'look' regardless of what it sounds like. But for people who want to focus on tone....this could be a Deluxe Reverb killer.

Only in black? I get it from a cost standpoint.

A combo at 33lbs? That's how much my Remedy or Z28 heads weigh! My Maz8 is pushing almost 50lbs with the Gold in it. It may be time to restructure my amplification.

Dear Santa, I've been a good boy this year.... for the most part. That lump of coal you left me last year left an impression.... honest. So could you possibly add a Cure and a Tele to World Peace and Economic Prosperity.... pleeeease. I knew you could.... thanks man. P.S. There will be a nice bottle of scotch for you by the fireplace.

Was that Doc's right hand turning the knobs? I'll probably pick one up. Love the idea of Z-Lux sound in a smaller, lighter package.
