Nothing too fancy but for me it is...haha. Presonus AR16 USB. As soon as I saw this online, I had to have one. The ability to plug the band into the mixer and record was the selling point...you can record to SD card but that's not what I wanted it for...you can plug in to your computer and record all tracks simultaneously into Presonus' program "Capture"...then send the file(s) over to Studio one for mixing. It's the perfect way for us to record rehearsals or gigs. It's got some other cool features like the "super channel"...that seems to be a huge selling point. That channel can accommodate your regular RCA inputs, stereo cable input, SD card or bluetooth. Again, nothing too fancy but it'll open the my door to a little recording and mixing...I love that stuff but I am at the beginning of it all.

Nice, Mark. I've been intrigued by this mixer for a while. Many cool features. Let us know how you like it and how steep the learning curve is.

The learning curve on the mixer is not steep at all. I had a Mackie Pro FX12 that was the cat's meow...I sold it to a buddy of mine and this being analog front end, it's simple. Where I will likely struggle at times is with the Studio One DAW...it's not overly complicated but there's new things in there every time I use it...I guess that's how you learn. Looking forward to getting some time with it this weekend for a gig...then the recording will most likely happen after the holidays. The only real complaints I have heard is when people record to the SD, there's a lot of hiss going on. I'm not interested in recording to SD, just to the computer.

Mark, are you going to record gigs? Or will most recording be studio / rehearsal?
How does the audio data get into the computer? USB?

There's a couple ways to record with the board...one is a main mix out to SD card. I won't be doing that. Second way is like an interface. Mixer goes via USB to the computer. From there, you use "Capture" to get your individual tracks. Once you open Capture with the mixer plugged in to your computer, you start a session. All the tracks are armed to record so all you have to do is hit the record button and start playing. It will grab each channel on its own. They come in dry pre fader I guess. So you save your session and open it right back up in the Studio One DAW and that allows you to mix, add some effects and all that good stuff. The version of Studio One that I have does not allow you to master...you have to go to the Pro version to get that.
So all in all, it's a great live mixer, recording interface for getting gigs or rehearsals. I am sure it would work great in a studio too. We'll use it at gigs and in our jam room.

The Capture software is really good. Very streamlined! After you get the stuff it's very easy to import into any other DAW like Pro Tools, Logic, Reaper. I just recorded a gig last night using Capture from one of their larger mixers.

I just recorded a gig last night using Capture from one of their larger mixers. Someday, I would love to have one of the Presonus digital mixers. I like Capture and I am trying to learn Studio One. I use Adobe Audition now but I do like what I see in SO. It's all like learning a new language...I do find it a challenge and quite fun...I'll never be a recording engineer by any means but I do see myself getting lost in and obsessed with it.
