Update on the pedals - The Gain Changer has been taken off just because the Zendrive covered up to a point that then the Plimsoul could take it the rest of the way.

I started to read through all the posts then figured it would be a bad idea to want that many pedals, haha!! First of all I second the idea of using the amp pushed for OD and cleaning up with the guitars volume knob, I played for a few months like that and loved it. Pedal wise I use an RYRA Clone set mildly dirty, hands down my favorite OD I've owned, then I use a Matchless Hot Box 3, this thing is over the top amazing, it is true tube OD, its a tube preamp in a pedal. The RYRA is clean boost to mild drive, super smooth, for a more scooped drive tumor saturation I'll use the Matchless. The Matchless is a two channel pedal so I can have two different clean tones between it and the Z to then stack the drives on. If I'm feeling especially "riffy" I'll have both the RYRA and Matchless on and that true sustain and gain heaven.
In all honesty though, there's quite a few of us on this forum that use the RYRA, the maker is a member as well, YOU CAN NOT GO WRONG with that pedal. It's the tops for sure.

I keep rotating drives in and out. I like all of them in front of my Maz. Timmy, BB Preamp, Tumnus, Cartographer, EP Booster are all great low gain/boost pedals. For more dirt I like the Skreddy P19 or the Freakshow Brown Rabbit.
Current board is Tumnus>Julia>Dark Echo>Flint and I'm really enjoying the simplicity. I think I need another drive pedal on there though...

Hi. Newbie to this board and very much a "learner" when it comes to playing guitar. I've been lucky enough to be able to buy a Maz18 Jr and I've just fitted a Brake-Lite in the back. This helps no end compared with just "the volume up and the master down". I've just got a few pedals - my OD is the Z-Drive which I'm just starting to get to grips with. Seems a really good pedal in a not too dirty sort of way.

still loving my new Plimsoul. There's just something a little extra, and it sounds so good.

Last night I pulled the Maz out for the first time in several months. Had been using the Antidote. In the meantime I picked up Mad Professor's Simble for my small board. The Simble sounded great through the the Maz. Just the right amount of mid push made it blend so well with the Amp.

Which overdrive pedals are you using with your Maz 18? Low Gain, High Gain, Rhythm Or Lead, or all of the above. Try a treble booster! Here in England "Hubcap John" makes a killer RangeMaster clone. He uses a socket for the transistor so you can experiment with changing out your own germanium transistors. You'll find him on eBay.

No OD pedals, didn't need em after I got the Treble Booster. TB made the guitars controls come alive. For sure you need to get the amp working a bit but the vol/tone on my Tele give me all the variations of clean/crunch I need. Having said that I dont play metal/hard rock. More soulful rock so no super hi-gain read. Bit of occasional chorus/delay/verb and I'm done ! For years we've been reading about turn the guitar up for crunch, down for clean. It always sounded "weedy" backed off. No more! Germanium Treble Booster is your secret weapon - sshhhh!

Im settling in with the whole setup...finally after all..."not even using a pedal board/drive pedal/plugged straight in...lately" I am likely on the same ship...Paisley Drive, BB Preamp, TS mini, now this Soul Driven...all TS type pedals. Will only have two of the four on my board. No room for all. Not selling the BB and I am digging my Paisley for rhythm work. The Soul Driven has been on my mind for some time and just happened to see one for a great price. So, I snagged it. Should be here tomorrow or Thursday.

As per my comment further up this thread, I have a Z-Drive - which I like very much but it seems "polite" - as opposed to heavy / dirty - even when turned up to the max. So, I wen to the local guitar emporium and had a play with a few distortion pedals and finally decided to go with the Boss MT-2, which seemed to be about as dirty as I could find. The only thing is that it doesn't seem to retain what I can only describe as "string definition" - it's just a wall of sound.
Maybe I'm looking for something that doesn't / can't exist but please bear with me as I'm at the newbie / learner end of the guitar playing scale (no pun intended).
Anyone have any suggestions for something that would make my Maz18 Jr sound properly heavy - but with a bit of subtlety / ability to hear the strings than just a big wall of sound? Incidentally, I really do like the Z-Drive and wanting something heavier is for exceptions rather than the norm.

For years with my Maz 38 I've been using my KOT, OCD and KTR. Now I have my Maz Jr I used the same pedals on my first gig with it last night and they all work great with that amp too. Different drive pedals for different guitars. Update...still basically the same setup, but I rely on the KOT so much I bought a spare. I also replaced my KTR with a Tumnus which I prefer. I have to say the tone bypass on my Maz and Cure sounds really good, but I have a bit more versatility with pedals, and also I can't use the bypass footswitch on stage as it has no led. Great for home or studio though.

I've been messing with the Boss Angry Driver. The collaboration with JHS. One side is the Angry Charlie and one side is the Blues Driver. Many different options for running alone, together in parallel, one into the other, etc.
All in a standard Boss single size stomp.
I'm really liking it.

Forgot to mention...Analogman King of Tone on all leads. Best pedal ever!! I keep coming back to KoT. It's been back on board for several months and is not about to go off. Yep. The KoT sounds phenomenal with my Dr Z amp.

Which overdrive pedals are you using with your Maz 18? Low Gain, High Gain, Rhythm Or Lead, or all of the above. Xotic RC booster v1 for bass “thump” TC Electronics for overall EQ, sometimes Xotic BB, Plimsol. Ithe amp Volume and master at about halfway and use guitar volume to control output (Fender Stratocaster)..

Lately I've only been using my first-issue Fulltone Soul Bender. Once I dial in the amp and the pedal, I just use the onboard volume and tone switches on my 80s era Japanese strat. I love it. Increasing the volume when desired can lead to some nice, controlled feedback. My alternate is a Timmy; very different beast but still highly recommended.

I still haven't found an OD pedal that doesn't sound great through a Maz.
I've recently been using a Mini Tubescreamer, Soul Food, OCD and a RC Booster. They all sound awesome through both my Maz and my Lux.
Like most folks, I'm always trying new OD's, but I don't think I'll ever let go of my OCD or my RC Booster.

I just got a a Maz18NRmark2 blackout Head about 8 weeks ago. I’m using the Barber Gain Changer SR with the middle drive settings and a Creation Audio Labs 4.23 clean boost. It’s plenty for what I’m doing.

It's been a few years since I had my Maz Jr but I loved the Crusak Screamer fuzz I had with that amp. Don't hear much about that pedal anymore but I thought it was great. How did you set yours? Cusack makes great stuff. I have the Tap-a-Fuzz (Screamer Fuzz with a tremolo built in). I've had it along side some really good Tube Screamer pedals and it is great. I took it off my board shortly before getting my Maz 18 when I got my KoT. The KoT is great, but my other od's aren't selling, so once the Maz is back from Dr. Z's with the mkii update I'm going to play around with the Cusack. I've always loved it and don't need extra od's sitting around. I know I can sell the KoT if needed.
