I usually run the 6L6's-I am for the most part a rule following within the lines coloring person.I also think the Doc knows what works best in the amp-I have and sometimes plug in the 6V6's or EL 34's for experimentation, but am nervous about running them for a long time in there-it's usually less than 6 hours playing time, then back to what the manufacturer/designer recomends. He knows better than me,I am not going to argue.

.....I've been running JJ 6V6 for about a week. I finally re-tubed the Therapy and also put the Weber ceramic Blue Dog back into the ol' Z cab. I really like the JJ 12ax7 in the V1.... I tried a new EHX, which felt scooped EQ wise, an old Amperex Bugle Boy, a Groove Tube, and a couple others I had laying around but I LOVE the JJ. I put the Bugle Boy in V2 and it seems to add a bit more harmonics there.
New tubes really warmed the amp back up. This amp has tons of clarity, even at full overdrive.....it also has a bunch of highs. Like high and then higher....like so high. It really shimmers. Old shimmering Shirley ... the Weber speaker sounds much better with the new tubes.
I've been loving my Swampkaster lately....finding all kinds of Rolling Stones tones in this amp....Exile on Main St....
I might try a WGS 12c/s at some point.

So fun to hear the differences that a simple tube change can make. It's just such a great amplifier. I've no doubt stressed my tube sockets by all the swapping I've done! I am back to Doc's specified tubes and a new to me Air Brake that is really great with the Therapy. Once the Master gets up around 2:00 or so it gets so sweet and loud. The Air Brake does a great job taming it.

I have jj 5771's in the pre,and jj6L6's in the power, and am enjoying really loud cleans.I noticed this week that I don't love clean amp, dirt from a pedal though-pedals are gain changer and z-drive.It's probably the settings of the pedals, since I don't usually play fully clean.I like to have the amp dirty, and then go over the edge with either of the pedals.

The 6V6's do cut the overall volume, which is nice sometimes, and they also seem to add some squish...or compression, to the notes and chords. I've not been using any pedals lately.....since Dave mentioned using a Air Brake/Brake Lite with his Therapy- I've been thinking about adding one to my 1x12 cab.
This amp is cleaner than I originally felt. It has a lot of clean sounds in it. The EQ is so powerful.

My next door neighbor that I used to bribe with Starbuck's gift cards moved out, and the new couple that moved in aren't as big of a Therapy fan as we are...

I've been thinking about trying the JJ 6V6's just 'cause... I bought some NOS JAN Philips 6L6WGB from KCA tubes and like the sound ... it brought the overall volume down just a bit, but I am still using an attenuator for all the gigs I've had so far. This coming weekend I'll use it at a gig where we get pretty loud ... I'll see if I bypass the Attenuator and will report back. Anyway ... I love this amp!

This amp is loud....but the 6V6 seem to mellow out the overall volume. 6L6 are a stiff tube that really hold up under load, where as the 6V6 seem to squish just a bit. As far as the neighbors noticing them being quieter.....well I wouldn't be so sure Frank But it does make me think that I might be getting into ZLux or Cure tones, and about how much I like this amps EQ and it's ability to match so many tones. with a speaker or tube swap I'm sure this amp could get close to MOST other Z amps as well as other manufacturers. EVERYTIME I hear an amp I want I've been able to get close to it with the Therapy.

With the convertible cab, the Therapy really resonates like mofo.
The Therapy can already hit some of those Z28 tones, and based on a Z employee's description of the Cure, I bet there is overlap there as well.
Amazing what 5 knobs can get you...

As mentioned above, the 6V6's add more squish-and give more of a Tweediness IMO.They work better than the EL34's.I don't plan on useing them again.

I'm enjoying the Valco style tones I'm hearing with the Weber Blue Dog and 6V6's....I'm just leaving them in and trying to acclimate to the new tones....I love the Z Verb with this amp. The Z Verb can add many kind of room sounds. For a home player stand point- the Therapy brings a lot of interaction to the table. Multiple choices of tubes, speakers, and cabs ....as well as guitars give the tone nerd all kinds of hours geeking out.
chord clarity. Every note heard. Z is the Wire Whisperer.

Talking about different shades of tone...I thought (mistakenly) that with the great MV the Therapy sports that I wouldn't get any benefit from an attenuator. Boy was I wrong...I got the Air Brake and it's phenomenal. The variety of tone that I can get now, with the MV cranked up around 3:00, is really cool. The Therapy is really in a class of its own.

I may be wrong but won't the 5771's give you more headroom? I would go back to the 12ax7s for more dirt from the amp.

I love the gain the Therapy can get with a 12AX7, but 5751's do something special to this amp. There's this fine dance on the edge of breakup where you're leading and the amp follows. You want hairy, sustaining dirt? Dig in. You want big, fat, juicy semi-cleans? It's got you covered, too. Just lighten up that touch.

5771 is a partial part number for a fitting at work-my brain blurred the lines.
And yes, they do usually clean an amp up,I was looking for later dirt, and as Frank said a more fulfilling(IMO) strain of gain.

Sunday January 15, 2017 I've been running my 8 ohm speaker in the 4 ohm input for about a week I think..... oops .... that and the 6V6's really squish, squish, squish....
It really Cured some of my recent gas. If I remember right my mistake is the one that isn't really okay....i have plugged it back into its proper 8 ohm input - also I put the back onto the convertible cab and am going closed back for awhile with the 6V6's still installed in Big Red.
