Probably not one of Brad Paisleys better known tracks, but the tone he gets on the solo of "Find Yourself" from the "Cars" movie soundtrack is absolutely gorgeous; just floors me every time I hear it. Anyone have any idea what Amp he would have used for that? Could it have possibly been an early prototype of the Z-Wreck?

Love the movie and the song. That is a gorgeous tone. Same here; to this day it's still one of my favourite movies (much to my kids embarressment ). Sadly the solo was edited out of the movie cut, so I had no idea about it until I bought the track off iTunes for my Daughter. I think I've played it more than she has!!

I'm with you. On a rare occasion, I hear that tone and it always get my immediate attention; I think it's absolutely gorgeous. I'd love to capture that tone myself. I have a concert DVD of Jeremy Camp (Christian artist) from a few years back and the guitar player had that same tone. I think that guitar player was using a Bogner amp but I don't know how it was set or what effects he used. I describe the tone as overall spongy but crunchy on the edges when you lay into it, but bell-like at the same time with a hint of some sweet-sounding delay. But, honestly, I have no clue how to get there. I'm anxious to see if someone can break the code. Surely between my Maz18NR, my Ghia, and my Z-Lux, it's in there somewhere. Thanks for bringing this up.

That is a great tone. On my next conversation with Brad I'll bring it up and ask if he recalls the setup. I remember talking to Brad when he was at Pixar doing the recording, but I don't recall the specific amps used.

I just listened to the song for the first time. I assume you're talking about the solo in the middle of the song.
There's a lot of amps/pedals that would get that tone.
I think mostly what you're hearing is Brad's fingers/talent.

Sounds to me it could be a Paisley Drive pedal through a Vox type amp such as Brads old AC30 or Z Wreck or Mazerati. There is a slight bit of fuzz which the Paisley Drive adds. Of course as it was mentioned, his tone is in his fingers.

Thanks for the replies everyone; much appreciated. I guess one of of the reasons I'm curious whether it was an early Wreck prototype is because, while I've never had the pleasure of playing through a Wreck (not too many floating around Australia I don't think), from the clips I've heard on youtube demos, it comes across as having a much more even response that your average run of the mill AC-30. I've used AC-30s on & off for over 20 years, & as much as I love them, I always struggled with the hollowness of the low mids (a characteristic that I think was accentuated by the Vox's healthy upper mid spike!). Granted, YouTube vids aren't always the most accurate thing to go off; but one thing I heard in common with the Wreck clips that I went through was all the best attributes of an AC30, but with a fullness in the low end that I could never achieve with any of the five examples I've owned. I heard similar characteristics to this in Brads solo from that Song; hence my curiosity. Either way, it's still a beautiful tone; definitely sounds like a Vox variant of some sort, with a smattering of compression. And yes, I agree about the majority of it being Brad himself. I remember reading years ago about a time where George Benson got up & had a blow using Steve Lukathers rig. This was back in the days when Steve was using Superstrat Shredders & a rack the size of a Refrigerator; Benson apparently just threw Steves guitar on, turned up the volume - and instantly sounded like George Benson! (lol).

It's definitely in the ZWreck territory once you go past 2:00 on the dial. Another song that has a similar vibe is his solo for 'She's Everything'.
As far as the low end goes, a ZWreck through its 212 cab with a Gold and Blue has some serious thump for an AC30-esque amp.
The movie came out sometime in 2006 so the soundtrack would have been laid down in either 2005 or early 2006, so that may jive with the timeframe Doc et. al. were working on the original 'Wreck prototype.

Last night I pulled out the RX Jr and the Z-Wreck so I can play around with it tonight and over the weekend to see how close I can come to the 'Find Yourself' sound. I think I'll even watch the movies back-to-back tonight as well while I'm fiddling
