IMO keep your blackface. I've had my "67 Super Reverb for over 30 years and even thogh I don't gig with it and it needs work I know its still there as part of where I've been and it gives you perspective. That being said if you are not emotionally attached to it you can get rid of it. Right now I'm a true MAZ18 fan with no plans to switch and it's still nice to have an amp harem. If you want a thing bad enough you can get the cashish. Just my opinion

I have to concur with joekondziella. Keep it if you can afford to. I sold my DR and even though it was just a reissue I still miss it from time to time. I love the Maz and think it surpasses the DR in many ways but sometimes I miss my old friend.

Keep the Deluxe reverb if you can. I recently sold a 68/67 super reverb to buy a Ghia and regret not being able to keep both. At the time I thought it sounded good but not great, then I heard one that had been restored a bit better than my old one and I know that the amp I had probably needed a little more TLC, oh well. You will always be able to get some serious cash for it, it's such a nice amp for clubs and as a spare...its a classic and will never go out of favor. Keep 'em all I say (five amps and counting for me..)

Keep the Deluxe if you can. I made a big mistake 15 years ago and sold a "72 Marshall Super Lead 100 that was showroom mint. I have missed that amp since I sold it. I didn't even play it that much, but it was kinda like an old girlfriend, you don't miss them until they are gone. Not only are they hard to find, old amps that is, the old ones are going for 3-5 times what I sold mine for and most of what is out there is beat to crap. Your black face is only going to go up in value big time. The old stuff is getting harder and harder to find.

I used to have three Deluxe Reverbs, two Blackface and one silver. When I got a '67 Vibroluxe Reverb it was so much better that I sold the Deluxes. Should have kept at least the good Blackface because a couple of years later they shot up in value. I don't think we're going to see the blackfaces double or triple in value again for a long time, if ever. Other than the money I don't miss them. Like I said, I feel the Vobroluxe is a much better sounding and more versatile amp. However I don't play it anymore. I've for 40 or 50 old amps and the only ones I really plug into with any regularity is a Tweed Deluxe and a '57 Bassman. I would sell the DR if you have no real attachment. The DR Z is a much better amp.

I sold my '66 Deluxe Reverb earlier this year because my MAZ Jr. just did *everything* better. I don't miss the BF at all....

Small world. I bought the DR from JChance after owning a Maz Jr for about a year. But if you're not crazy about the sound anymore and it's in mint condition you can pick up any Z and then some for what those 40 year old amps are going for today.

You know, in a perfect world I probably would have kept that '66 Deluxe that jherman bought for *application* purposes....It really had the "classic" sweet Deluxe Reverb tone. But the Z's I have now are much more of a "do everything" amp. Of course I can't make them sound *exactly* like a Fender, but the cleans are outstanding in their own right, and overdriven the Z's just have more balls, aggressiveness. And as a working player with 2 little ones and a wife in college full time, the '66 DR was the "expendable" amp in the arsenal. The one thing I do miss about that Deluxe Reverb, I will say, is how it sounded overdriven with a Les Paul. I had a Weber California in it, and when the amp was cranked with 'buckers, it sounded HUGE.
So 19jmm68, if you don't *have* to sell the Deluxe, don't. But if you don't *have* to have a real blackface, you could always pick up a converted silverface later on, or buy one of the new Weber 6A20 BF Deluxe Reverb kits.....that is, of course, you can't find all that you want in your Z's...

I should say it's a keeper....Class A (like the MAZ) and class AB/push-pull (like your de-luxe reverb) amps have different sound qualities.....the 6V6 tube config is a rarity among amps...so, your uncle is right (clever man)...

JChance,
I read that you wrote about the deluxe reverb-
"The one thing I do miss about that Deluxe Reverb, I will say, is how it sounded overdriven with a Les Paul. I had a Weber California in it, and when the amp was cranked with 'buckers, it sounded HUGE."
I to to recall when I had a Deluxe reverb with humbuckers it ROARED. Have you had any luck with Z amps getting that huge overdriven sound. Theres something about the deluxe reverb amp not having that pure class A power that helps getting some of those amps to open up without being to much.
Im asking because I use humbucker guitars.

As far as Z amps go in terms of how they distort, there is no comparison in my mind. Z's are *made* to overdrive very musically. Remember that blackface Fender were made to stay *clean.* ;-) But, before I get flamed for that last remark....LOL.... There's certainly a charm and nostalgia to a blackface amp that's turned up to the point of giving up the goods. To answer your question about 'buckers with a Deluxe... I've never really thought the smaller Fenders were really a good match for them. Mainly because of the extended low end of a humbucker, and the smallish trannies of Deluxes, Princetons, Vibroluxes, etc. just never seemed to me like they did a good job of staying focused at higher volumes. But, with a really efficient speaker, like a Weber Cali or JBL, they tend to hold the bottom end of a Paul, SG, or whatever a lot better. With the '66 I had, on say 6 or 7 volume, it got this cool "edge of breakup" tone that sounded really good with a Les Paul. And when I added extra distortion from something like my Keeley modded TS-9, it really sounded awesome. Worked great in clubs working with bands that did a lot of classic Rock & Blues. And of course, would do the country thang with a Tele or Strat. With a Weber 5AR4 Copper Cap rectifier and the Cali speaker, I thought of my Deluxe as a "mini-Vibroverb." It would definitely get you into "Vibroverb's little brother" territory, but of course without the FAAAATTTT bottom and power usually associated with Vibroverbs. On the Gretchen Wilson tour last year, I was using the Deluxe along with my MAZ 18 Jr with 2 10's. Nice combination. Both were cranked and off stage ( we were using in-ears.) Now, if we weren't using in-ears and were using mainly wedges, those two amps together would have still been pretty loud, but I probably would have gone for two bigger amps instead. I was using about 50/50 split on the tour between single coils and humbuckers. Both worked equally well. But in the end, I found that I just loved the Z's better.

I sold my BF Deluxe and kept my Silver face becasue it was more versatile for what I was doing at the time. I used the SF for about 14 years and it was the "real deal", til I got a Maz 18 junior 1-12. Sold both my Deluxe's and Blues Jrs and never looked back. Put the money to a Maz 38 Sr. and never regretted the move. You gotta love them Z's.

I'm a packrat for amps but I don't miss the Deluxe Reverbs at all. I always found them to have spikey highs and mushy bass when cranked. The money gains will continue on those amps but not at the double digit rates they were doing.

Sell something else so you can have both amps. They are both that great.
