Guess you liky eh Keith? Jim It's a busy week at work. Only had a chance to unpack it late last night. I should get to give it a low-volume whirl later tonight. It's a beauty and I love the smell of the new tolex as soon as you open the box

Well, Doc deserves to have someone other than me talk about his amps. However, since I have one of the few on the board I'll give me insights after about 20 minutes with the amp. So, I'm running a head through my Z-Wreck cab and i used my Tele Plus with Lace Sensor Golds. It's late so I ran the amp at 9 -10 o'clock on both full and half settings. My first observation is i love the amp Based on a few comments on the board I expected the amp to be dark...really dark. Well, I don't find the amp dark (well, not at 10 o'clock on the dial). I'm sure it will pucker up and get darker once you turn up the wick but with my setup there is plenty of chime at the middle/neck position at 10 o'clock. There's chime there but it's different chime than my Z-Wreck/Rx Jr. I find those amps can bite when you dig in (the Rx Jr more than the Z Wreck). The Z-Wreck puckers up pretty good once you hit noon. BTW, that bite is not harsh....it is just more 'in your face'. With the DB-4 I find the chime more smooth/controlled. It's almost like you have a hint of compression on the G through High E strings. The amp is very even from top to bottom across the strings. I suspect part of this may be the Gold/Blue combo in the cab as well. I really like it. The amp feels a little more forgiving that my other EL84 Z's. I need to spend more time with it but my biggest surprise was how much the amp wasn't 'dark'. If you buy it expecting a Stangray/Rx Jr/ZWreck then your first impression will be that it's dark (or as I would call it...laid back). However, if you listen closely it has some great chime, but it's smooth. It's not spank...it's swank I'm sure this weekend I'll try it louder and with a LP. I love this amp...it's like a cross between a Z-Wreck and a Route 66 (that's a stretch, I know, but that's what comes to mind). Cool amp......glad I took the plunge. p.s. Oh, and 3 on the tone switch was the sweet spot for me.

I ordered a DB4 2-12 combo a while back and I too was amazed at how dark it wasn't. Thicker than the Z Wreck at lower volumes but plenty of chime/sparkle for me. But like you say, the Wreck thickens up when you crank it! That amp was just too dang big and heavy for this old fart! I sent it back for a Z Wreck combo and am very happy, but kinda miss the DB4. Congrats and looking forward to hearing more about your bonding!

Yep, the 212 combo was tempting but with so many cabs already the head was a logical choice...plus, I really wanted to try it through my Z-Wreck cab.
