Considering a RXES head. Couple of questions, head room with gold lace sensor single coils. Don;t see many strats played thru it any comments? Cab? I have a Z 4-10 that I am thinking of using. Play mix of country and classic rock and oldie style rock. pretty much everything. Is there anything I should know as to quirks etc or strenghts for that matter. I have never played one, never heard one in real time so going in deaf and blind. Let me know what you think, good, bad and otherwise. Thnx Mike

Traci Guns used a Celestion Gold in his though he usually plays a LP. Also ran a second Gold extension cab with it. Brad Paisley used his with Teles. Not sure who plays them with Strats but I'm sure someone here will chime in.

GREAT strat amp... GREAT!
I kept my Rx ES over my Stingray for this very reason...
the Rx Es (Jr and original) are just great with the strat... and to me with the Tele you could get a different sound and a bit more variety out of a tele than with the Ray which why I chose to keep it since I started using Tele's more than strats...
LOUD.
Always used an Airbreak with it until I got the master volume mod... highly recommended mod.
The RX ES through a stock Z best cab and a strat is one of the prettiest clean tones with hair I've ever heard. One of the reasons i got mine in the first place... unfortunately there is no where I could use the volume of that set up... a Z 4x10 should sound wonderful but will also be pretty loud so I'd recommend Airbreak and or Master mod... also both the Z best and the Z 4x10 especially love to be pushed hard so really a 2x10 or 1x12 cab may be a btter choice unless you can let it rip.
I prefer a 1x12 speaker to be able to use them to their full potential... Single Gold sounds wonderful with these, but I try and use a bit less efficient speaker like the Alnico silver bell or ceramic grey wolf... a Green back is really nice with these too and even less efficient that the others.. takes the volume down even more.
I love the Weber Silver bells / Grey Wolf with all my Z's but specifically these Rx's.

I agree with the previous posts. Although I don't have my Rx Jr anymore, it sounded stellar with single coil guitars, but I didn't care for humbuckers with it. Doesn't mean won't sound good, I just liked my single coils through it so much I never fiddled with the tone settings on the amp to find out. /o\

Haven't fired mine up in a while. Brilliant tone even at low volume settings. I think Jason's take is right on.
As far as I know, the Rx design with the EF86 after a 12ax7 was unique, at least within Doc's lineup.

In larger venues I used to use my JR with 2 convertible cabs, one with a alnico blue (on top) and a ceramic G12H30 on the bottom. This a a great combination. In smaller venues I just used the blue. I also used an Airbrake because it could get LOUD š.

Just played through my RX-ES with my FrankenStrat Saturday night. It is loaded with EMG ALNICOs. I swapped out the bridge pup with a Telecaster EMG pup recently, so I was eager to try it again. It tended to go into a smoother overdrive with the EMGs with the same settings I use with my 62 RI Telecaster Custom. The RX with the Strat EMG neck pup just sings! Very smooth bluesy sustaining tone. The in-between positions 2 & 4 got a nice satisfied nod from me while playing. Putting in the Tele bridge pup was an idea I got from watching a Lowell George video. I believe that I will play the Strat more through it, but probably will adjust the knobbies a bit from my Telecaster settings. David
