I'm not a bass player but I need a cheap bass for my music room. It will be basically for guests, laying down home recorded bass lines and whatever else. I've been looking at the P basses MIM and the Squires since I'm a Fender style guy. The genres of music will be country, blues and classic rock for the most part. I'm pretty open to suggestions or comments.

We bought my son Joshua a Squire Jazz for Christmas. I was also impressed with it, especially for under $200.

Squier Classic Vibe '60s P-Bass
Throw a bada$$ or hipshot bridge on there, an EMG or Bill Lawrence pickup, and you'll have yourself a mighty fine piece.

+1 on the classic vibe precision bass. Mines in fiesta red with tortoiseshell guard with a flame maple neck. Plays and sounds as good as the Mexican fenders if not better.

For some reason I knew the classic vibe suggestions would surface, I just didn't know the basses were as cool as the guitars. I'll probably go with the Vibe! Thanks guys!

I'd look for a used MIM J or P bass.

i found a 70s 0r 80s, i dont know, fender musicmaster bass in a small store in branson missouri a few years ago. i sent the pickups to lindy fralin and rewound them for a small charge.they were/are popular with ladies who play in country bands , theya re very lightweight and small. i auditioned for a country rock group and it is outstanding. might not be as hard to find as you think. i paid 300, great shape. i love the thing. i would probably go for the classic vibe though,,

I've got one of these at home. It's a great bass!! A set of flat wounds cost half as much as I spent on the bass. I've used it on a lot of records. Famous bass player in Nashville bought 10 of them and gave them out as Christmas presents one year.

Picked up the a Squier Affinity P+J bass (like a Precision with a split pickup in the neck and Jazz pickup in the bridge. $195 (tax included) from a local shop last week. Going to permanently hang in the home recording room to track parts. Plays well and sounds good, too. I've tried to use keyboards and processed guitars to record bass parts over the years and it just don't work. Glad I'm going to have some nice sounding bottom end even if it's just for home demos.

I bought a Squire VM Jazz about ten years ago and it's been great. I went looking for a bass and I had a $2K limit. I tried everything at three different stores including Elderly, and this one played and sounded so good that I passed on the Geddy Lee Jazz that I was going to buy. I put in a set of DiMarzio pickups and never looked back.
