I don't know where to post this, so since it's somewhat SRZ related, I'll put it here.
I'm moving on from my Monza as I need something a little beefier for those hard rock shows. I got the chance to play an SRZ last weekend and I loved it, but......................the thing was so darn loud!!! Even attenuated and with a low DB speaker, it will never work for the smaller venues I play and the amount of gain needed. It reminded me of the loudness of my 100 watt Rectifier's and Ecstasy's - wake the dead loud.
Any one have experiences with something similar in the hot rodded JCM realm that's under 40 watts??? Friedman is pretty much out of the question. I got to use a Small Box 50 on loaner for a couple gigs and I just couldn't get the thing to cut. Too much compression going on. The Pink Taco is awesome, but I want to stay away from anything high gain that's EL84 based. Would prefer EL34's.
Possibly looking into a Fargen Olde 800 or maybe a Carol Ann Trip-R or Triptik. I may even drop some EL34's into my Therapy and see what I can cop with that. Help!!!

Based on what I have seen the 25 watt Fargen Ye Olde would do it. It's on my list to get as one of my next amps for that modded 80s sound. The Friedman Brown Eye is neat too but it's expensive.

I don't get Friedman at all. Sells off to Premier Builders Guild and starts using PCB to streamline operations, and the price goes up 50%. The beauty of the free market, I guess.
I wish there was somewhere to play a Fargen these days, but flying blind might be the way to go! I know Doc also said he's going to be working on another EL34 rock amp soon, but I imagine he has enough on his plate fulfilling those DB4 orders.

I used to have a Marshall Silver Jubilee head and 4x12 in the late 80's ...great amp. I see they are releasing a smaller 20/5 watt head and 1x12 combo. I am looking forward to trying it, although my Les Paul through my cranked Maz 8 has kept me happy for the past few years.

Probably a pipe dream, but you never know.

I love how my Lesters sound through my cranked Maz 18, but it just doesn't have the beef I need. It's not am indictment on the amp, it's like asking an F1 car to tow the space ship...

I don't think a new Z amp would be in this vein based on past discussions on this forum. These higher gain amps just don't seem to be something Doc is interested in and that's cool. The SRZ was recently discontinued and I don't see a new EL34 amp being made by Z having more gain that the SRZ....but I'm open to being wrong on this!

I have no idea what the SRZ sounds like, but my buddy has a late 90's Matchless Clubman 35, and that thing really sings. Two EL34's, ef86 front end, lots of gain on tap and the master is actually pretty effective. It is a great amp.
If you get a chance to put some EL34's into the Therapy let me know how that goes. I have often wondered about that, but don't want to buy some just to try it out.

Honestly if your interested he would have to find you an amp locally to try. He is scaled down to just he and a couple of techs and he just does custom builds. That was a couple of years ago. He doesn't have any inventory. Call him Frank and see if he can set you up.

This was Doc's quote RE: discontinuing the SRZ: "I also want to have amps which use my favorite output tubes incorporated into various pre-amp schemes. I now don't have an EL 34 based amp one of my favorate sounding rock tubes, I'm working on changing that." I wouldn't expect anything in the realm of an Uberschall or a Diezel or whatever, but an updated Monza/SRZ wouldn't be out of the equation either. I love the tone of the Monza, I just wish it was bigger. And I love the Tone of the SRZ65, I just wish it was about 35 watts.

But alas, I can't bring myself to spend north of $3500 on an amp...

How about a Mazerratti GT with a Master Volume mod? I've never played a Maz GT, put I'd prefer to stay away from EL84's for higher gain...

I'm enjoying the Antidote running through the brake-lite as it is loud. Nice touch sensitivity and crunch. Can't compare it to an SRZ65 as I've never tried one, but it has a certain kindred spirit to my plexi from almost 50 years ago. Got it used in '70 foolishly sold it in '82 or '83.
The Antidote satisfies.

Nothing Compares to this Rock -N - Roll Tone Machine!!! It has one of the best Master Volumes out there, roll the gain back, use the Volume To control overall Levels , It Inhales OD's and Dist Pedals . The more you throw at it the Better it sounds. I been running a Timmy V1 On all the time then add a Klon or even a Gnarly Dist Box like a Bogner Red or a Butler Real Tube for over the Top 80's totally saturated Tones!! 50 WATTS is the ultimate Nice headroom and Uhmmff when needed. Power Scaling on this amp would be Glorious though! Been a while since Ive been on the forum, Big Shout out to all My SRZ DECIPLES AND DR Z USERS PERIOD!

I've actually been super impressed at how well the master works on my '08 SRZ65. Is it 100% transparent? No, but more so than leaving the master open and controlling volume w/ the Brake Lite by my ears.
I haven't found a JCM alike (or an actual 800/900) that sounded as good all the way from stage volume through home practice levels as the SRZ so far. Never tried the Fargen or Carol Ann though.
The out of control loud one for me is my non-MV Remedy. Even on half power I feel like I probably ought to have earplug in w/ the volumes at ~8 o'clock - 8:30. Thank god for attenuators...

I've actually been delighted with the /13 AMW 39 I purchased. It's just about the perfect M style amp for me and its master volume is probably the best I've ever played. I will definitely be checking out Doc's new EL34 amp when that drops, though.

Hi Everyone this is my first post and I'm a first time Dr Z SRZ owner. And right off the bat just have to say being a long time owner of a 1981-JCM800 1x12 combo. My SRZ is real deal!Ok It's loud but man it takes what I loved about my 800 EL34's and takes it to the next level! How I tamed it was to install first a effects loop from Metro Amps, then built a Volume box with a 250K pot between the send & return. Also put in the loop a Strymon El Capistan Tape echo. If any of you are interested here's a link I put on YouTube. Also I love the way DrZ setup the EQ it's the best of Marshall & Fender. I play Classic Rock and Worship and it works for it all !!! Take Care. Vic.
