Hi all,I'm picking up a jaz on Saturday and can't wait. I've had a couple of maz's a ghia and a remedy so it's safe to say I love z's lol. My question is what can I expect? How it differs from the above amps? I'm guessing much more fendery? Also which overdrives work well with it? Thanks in advance llew.

What configuration?
Yes, very much centered on blackface tone, but with a lot of latitude. You won't get Voxy chime -- no EL84s. As you know, it's sort of a MAZ front end (except no Cut) coupled to a Remedy style 4x6V6 power section. I think John often says the MAZ is 2/3 Vox, 1/3 Marshall and the Ghia is the reverse. Fair description. But each of those has a bit of Fender too. JAZ has a whole lot more Fender, maybe a bit of Marshall, and almost zero Vox. You can make the JAZ very bright, but it won't chime.
Like most Zs, you can throw pretty much any OD at it, just adjust the amp's volume to mate up with the gain and level on the dirt box.
Some setting ideas to get you up the curve on getting your tone:
Dime the master, turn the bass off, put treble and mid near noon. Plug in and turn up Volume. Listen. Adjust; maybe bring in a little bass. Try this in both half and full-power modes.
Dime all the tone knobs. Put Master at noon. Bring up the volume. Re-set eq to suit.
Dime the Volume, dime the tone knobs, bring up Master.
Like the MAZ, the tone knobs are passive, so the lower they're set the less gain you're getting from the front-end.
Have fun and let us know how it goes.

That's great thanks very much. I think I'll start with the old favourites a timmy and a tubescreamer and see how I get on.

One more for you: Dime master and mid, turn bass off, set volume around 1 o'clock, treble about the same. Works nicely with a Les Paul as of a few minutes ago.

And it's the 2x10 combo.

A great amp that was misunderstood! It's very close to Z-Lux tonally so think blackface fender sounds. The tube screamer is a good choice for it.

Anyone tried a Tim pedal with their jaz? Yes. It's my main OD with that amp. I also use an animal with it . Mine's a head and I normally use it with a 2x10 cab.

Just got it home, first impressions are very positive I must say. Any other suggestions for settings? So far I'm liking master at full, volume at 9,bass middle and treble all at noon and reverb at 9. I notice it's a lot "stiffer" for want of a better word than my maz. Lovely lovely amp. Can't wait to find my way around it.

That is pretty much where I started with my settings and the impressions I had at first. I experimented with some other tone settings but I'm back close to where I started. T=1:30, M=Noon, B=10:30. I normally run at 40 watts at a gig; 20 watts only when necessary. I like the 'stiffness' you noted but then I played a Twin Reverb for many years and they both have solid state rectifiers. I can always go to my MAZ Jr or other amps I have if I need compression. It's good to have different flavors of amps.

Any other suggestions for overdrives? I usually like amp overdrive and then use the guitar volume to control/dirty but the clean sound is so good I may just use pedals? Definitely looking at a Tim (is it really that much better than a timmy?) And maybe something like an ocd for the rockier stuff? Sorry for all the questions.

Not better; just more. It has a boost switch with drive and tone controls and an effects loop. Other than that it's the same as a Timmy. You could do the same thing with a Timmy and a boost pedal of your choice.

Try turning up all the eq to max. I installed a tone stack bypass on mine but maxing the eq will get you in the ballpark. Volume and master set to 1:00. Behold the glory lol. I use a good old fashioned tube screamer for more. Drive set fully off, tone at noon, and level to taste (usually around 1:00) It's a great amp. At the moment my only amp . Also the Z12 speaker sounds totally excellent with the JAZ, no surprise I suppose.... Enjoy that amp. It's a good one.
