My recently acquired Stingray sounds amazing and has WAY more headroom than any of my previous StangRays had... I could crank it up over half way before I started getting any "hair". Even up all the way, I wasn't into overdrive territory.
Just for curiosity sake, I swapped out the EL84 tubes with a brand new set of JJ's I've had for several years. I immediately noticed a huge difference. At just under 4 on the volume, I had "hair"..At half way, I had more hair than with the other tubes at full volume. At full volume, I was probably in 80s AC/DC overdrive - And this is all using a single coil Telecaster. This is how my other Rays were when I had them.
I'm not sure what the rating was on the JJ's I pulled out, but the labeling was silver (or light gray) whereas the new ones have red labeling. Not sure if that means anything and that the silver label ones are higher headroom, or they had some age on them.. But power tubes do make a huge difference in the head room.
I'm sure most already know this, but I just wanted to share in case there were some that were curious.

Interesting! With my Maz 38, I always get just a little more headroom using JJ EL84's vs Sovtek's. Sounds like you have a special set of tubes!

Agreed, when the 'ray' magic/mojo would start to wane I would put new power tubes in and, BAM there is was. I'm sure i'm commenting on the obvious. I like the TAD tubes in the Ray, they were not as bold as the JJ's but I though were a but smoother in their breakup. I also like the JJ's... maybe I just like the ray.
