Hello folks. I'm new to this board, but have been a long term lurker! I'm on my 3rd Z now - Remedy (pre-MV), Maz 18NR and Z28 1x10. Used my Remedy with a Brake Lite last night. Flipped it over to the 40w setting (volume about 1:00, BL on 2 clicks). Started to smell burning. Smelt different to the usual dust burning, so quickly flipped it back to 20w, and dropped the volume. It says the Brake Lite takes up to 40w, but I was pushing the amp pretty hard - any suggestions? Cheers!

Brake Lite is rated at 45 Watts, but can handle more. I've used mine with the Remedy at 40 watts many times without issue. Makes me wonder if you have another issue there somewhere.

I used my Antidote Friday night on a 3 hour gig, Amp volumes at 2:30 and noon. Brake light on 3 clicks and then 2 clicks. No issues.

That's the smell of rock and roll son!
JK, I used my SA with the Antidote at several gigs with no problem. It should handle the Remedy without a problem. Hope you get it figured out!

It seems unusual to smell a burning smell. I do know that if you look at Weber's attenuators they mention that you may have a burning smell which is really heat burning off as the load and "Friction" are increased.

Send Don a note at Dr. Z Repair. He may have some suggestions about what is happening there. Here's the email address:

Smell is from amp or brakelite? I’d consider opening each and having a look around for obvious indicators of something melting or burning. Then call Don.

I'm a 100% sure burning smell, in my case, comes from the brake like. You can even see in the interior the material thats burning which is where the metals that you can move for more or less attenuation connects. In my case I dont mine the smell. But it is very strong. To the degree of all band members looking to each other questioning the source of the smell.

Did you buy the brakelite new? I wonder if a previous owner sprayed something in there (lubricant?) that is burning off?

If you are sure it's coming from the strap that is on the resistor, make sure that the strap screw is tight. If the connection from the strap to the resistor windings is loose, it's going to overheat. Everyone's comments about making sure it is clean are right on too. Is it possible someone sprayed WD-40 or some other cleaner/lubricant in there? If so, get some contact cleaner that specifically says on the label "Leaves no residue" and clean the resistors.

Note: Original post is two years old. Does that render it irrelevant for those who may have missed it? No, but if people are 1) asking questions in order to answer the question ...or 2) offering up solutions.....the original poster may have either solved the problem, or moved on. That's why I pointed out the post is two years old. This happens once in a while. Posts that were made several years ago end up having people trying to help, but asking questions on a subject that is many years old. This is why I tried to be polite and say "Note"...not "hey morons...this post is X years old". (not that I would call people morons in the first place)

Yeah, many (maybe most) of these older topics have an ongoing relevance. Some time back the search function here was vastly improved, and as a result I often find myself gleaning information from posts that are 10+ years old. Not only does this forum have the best members on the internet, but the knowledge base of those members is without equal!

Z Let me be clear because the nature of being active in forums and the fastness of communications can mislead or inform incorrectly... I bought mine used it smelled like burning for about 3 to 4 practices. I've been using it ever since and it does not smell anymore. I read in the webber attenuation faq that burning smell in their attenuators is normal for the first 3 to 4 hours of use. Don't know if the same applies to Dr. Z but just throwing it out there. Mine does, however rattle in low attenuation settings. I mean the bass freq making it rattle not the mechanism by itself.

Z I have the same issue, but mine was bought new many years ago for me by my dad, as a birthday gift. It's probably too old for warranty and my dad has since passed back in October, so I wouldn't begin to know how to prove it was mine new. Can you advise what I should do? Should I just get a local guy to check it out? If so, there anything specific I should tell him to look for, or that I can check myself? Nothing has been sprayed into it, as some other comments queried, and I've lately been using it on both my Maz 18 and my PRS HDRX 20. Both are well below the rated wattage, being 18 and 20 watts respectively. I have noticed the smell more recently since using it with the PRS HDRX 20. It's basically a plexi with a pair of 5881 supposedly putting out 20 watts, though I think that's understated- it acts like it's closer to 35 watts, still within range for a brake lite I assume. UPDATE: I spoke on the phone with the tech support guy at DR Z, and he says not to worry about the smell. Says it's normal and I can go ahead and rock & roll it.
