I hear people say that the Maz 38 is LOUUUUD. For me, loud is subjective, and I have been told that I play in "pretty freaking loud band."
I play my Remedy live all the time with a Tele, and I run it on full power, with the MV dimed or almost dimed and V1 and V2 around 11. I'm using a 1x12 Dr. Z convertible cab with a cream back. At those settings, it cleans up nicely with my volume knob, and it also has a great crunchy tone when the volume is wide open. Here's my question for those of you who have owned and gigged both the Remedy and the 38: Do you think the Maz would be louder than the Remedy when set up to run the same basic way? Or would their output be pretty similar.
I like the Maz 18, but know for a fact that in my playing situation, it won't have enough clean headroom later in the night when the drummer starts playing louder because he can't hear his drums! The 38 seems like the perfect answer to that, BUT......not if it is TOO loud.
Thoughts?

The Maz 38 was my first introduction to Z. It was a 1x12 combo with a G12h. Although I wasn't able to play any large venues with it was definitely more than I would ever need. But CLEAN? It could do clean in spades for me as well as very pedal friendly. I sold it years ago to get a Maz 18NR head because of back issues but currently have a Remedy (un-modded). I have been able to use it at the 40 watt setting with a Gold or a Creamback a few times and my thought is - LOUD, more so than I remember the 38. But also a more aggressive loud. So I think it may depend on the type of loud you are looking for. My Remedy does love my Rockett Animal and Tim/Timmy pedals, but it really shines cranked up with humbuckers.

I love my Remedy, and I can't imagine gigging with another amp (ok, I can imagine it!) Since getting it, I have sold off all my other gig worthy amps and don't have anything as a back up. This is where my wife and I tend to disagree, but I think it is irresponsible to NOT have a backup. The GAS in me thinks that running two cabs, the Remedy for dirt and the Maz 38 for clean would be a fun time for all! However, I would need to buy a bigger dolly to move all that and our stage rider requirements would have to expand! When you had the 38, could you turn it up so that you could get some grit on it before it got TOO loud or did you strictly have to use pedals for any kind of low gain dirt?

One of the `1st things I got was an Airbrake - way before Brakelites were introduced, and it helped me get the "hair" I wanted when needed, but then again I didn't get that many outdoor or large venue gigs. If you want to see how the 38 sounds live check out Buddy's setup on John Mayalls 70th Birthday Bash - 38 with a Zbest.

I've had both, still have the Remedy. A lot of this depends on what speaker configuration you're using...Greenbacks are not going to sound nearly as "loud" as some more efficient speakers, for example. I had a Vox 2X12 cab for awhile with Eminence speakers that were rated wayyy over the Remedy wattage-wise, and that thing was holy-freakin'-crap-LOUD...with those speakers...not so much now through another cab. I think the MAZ probably has more clean headroom due to it's design.

I have both, earlier versions un-modded. I think that the Maz 38 cuts so well that it's on par with the Remedy volume wise. I love both amps ( the only Z amps I own ). I have used both at the same time with an A/B switch & they were a great match. Mostly I've pondered which amp to take.

I am not ready to buy one just yet, but the perfect one just showed up on CL is my area. I think I should jump on it! Maz 38 NR Mint for $1050

Haven't played a NR Maz 38 but, I've always heard that the NR version has a little more drive.

If you're diming the master on your Remedy I doubt the 38 will be too loud. As far as it breaking up, I had to replace the V1 12ax7 with a 5751 to help it stay more clean at higher volumes. This is using a p90 equipped guitar which definitely pushes the front end of the amp harder than a tele though.

My Maz Sr reverb head does 99% of my gigs. Yes it's potentially a loud amp, but the Airbrake takes care of that. Most gigs I set it on two clicks, sometimes one or three, and very occasionally I don't use it at all. That way my Maz covers just about all situations. This is with a 1x12 convertible cab with a Gold. I never tried a Remedy though.

Had both, still have the 38NR and its louder than the Remedy. You can dumb it down some with speaker choice but its loud. It can cut thru 100 watt marshalls no problem. I used it to play guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboard, steel guitar, about the only thing I did not throw at it was a bass guitar. I used a Tonker for a while, whew...then settled on a THD 2-12 cab and I loaded RedFangs in it..it does have a great MV that really works so you can tame it down as needed...but no matter what, its got the goods in the vol department. Great amp.
