For a little hair and ability to maintain the great tone of the Stang Ray, you should try a B.K. Butler tube driver. They are a little pricey, but will put a smile on your face. I went thru several pedals looking for that perfect low to mid distorted sound and the B.K. delivered.

I've had the best luck with the Zendrive, 80's TC ELectronic Booster + Line Driver & Distortion, and my new acquisition, and a LovePedal LO Driver. The LO Driver is my current favorite for that touch sensitive blues rock tone, think early Robbie Robertson Tele tone.

I've been using a lovekraft mojodrive with my stingray. I really like the tones I get from it. I run it rather tamed down. drive knob on the pedal is only at about 9:0, but it will get real close to that cranked up ray sound. If i'm playing a smaller sized room with my stingray I just leave that pedal on all the time. It gives just a little bit of edge, reacts well to humbuckers and singles, and feels very amp like. I just work the volume on the guitar from there.

I use a ibanez ts808 and a blues drives, for that hairy sound I prefer the blues driver. It keeps the ray's sound and just adds some sparkel. For more heavy stuff I use a proco rat in comb with the blues driver. I cant run the rat alone but in comb. with bd or ts808 it sounds awsome. I also have the sexdrive, I use it as a boost for solo's, I dont like the overdrive it produces. I will replace the sexdrive with a rc booster soon. I think the ray takes a lot of pedals but it don't like to much treble, I run all of my pedals almost with no treble. Played live last night and I love my ray, it suprises me each time.

I'm really enjoying my BB Preamp. Have been using a Fulltone FD2 with good results. The BB is just much more versatile. I can set the Stangray to be a little brighter than usual for my clean tone and roll off the treble on the BB Preamp. Great pedal.

I am using a Lovepedal Eternity and a HAO Driver as gain boost.
I have had a lot of amps and my Lovepedal has never being used... but when I bought the Ray it became my main drive pedal.

I just recently got a Wampler Pinnacle 2 pedal. This is one of the most versitile overdrive/distortion pedals I have played through. It has a drive, contour, tone control and volume knobs. It also has a toggle switch that goes from classic rock sounds to modern rock sounds, which may be of interest to you. This pedal can put out sounds from Van Halen's brown sound to classic blues as well.

I never liked my Zen Drive OR Sparkle Drive until I got my RAY a month ago... Now, they're my most used pair. That'll teach me to get rid of a pedal just because I don't have the right amp for it... Wampler "Hot Wired" -> EP Boost is another great duo... New Xotic "AC Comp" looks really good too... tom

I'd like to try some of the pedals you guys mentioned here on this thread however I really don't want to get back on the pedal quest $$$$$$$$$$$$$ . Several years ago I tried a few OD's and settled on an OCD not sure which version but I get great results with it. I also use an Xotic RC usually left on all the time. Currently using it with my Monza I find that I don't need much Gain at all, just a hair.

I find that no overdrive box sounds comparable to the cranked Ray. They all sound harsh, compressed or synthetic. To my ears, the Ray doesnt take overdrive pedals nearly as well as my Ghia, so I usually just plug straight in, dial down the airbrake and crank the amp. I've tried lots of great overdrives with it (well, overdrives that a great with all my other amps at least), and none of them preserve the characteristics I love about the amp.
You cant really fake that Stang Ray sound!

Hi, I've had my best luck with an Analogman King Of Tone. One other thing to think about... check out this article: www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/Issue/2010/Nov/Wagging_the_Dog_When_Pedals_Come_Full_Circle.aspxI'm using fairly low output pickups with my Stang Ray, and I'm really liking the sound. I'm using a Strat Plus with Lollar Blackface Vintage pickups - sounds great. And check out Smit's Handwound Guitar Pickups: smitspickups.com/. I really like these - I have an HSS setup in an american deluxe strat with a dual variable coil tap split on the humbucker - super handy for cover tunes. By the way, Kevin Smith of Smit's pickups was very helpful in selecting the best pickups for me. And he has an option to wire the entire strat harness. I just attached it to the jack and a pickguard. They sound great.

Thanks "toms" - that was interesting. WELCOME to the forum... I'm using a Wampler "Black 65" or a Wampler "Hot Wired" - along with an "RC Booster" or an "EP Booster"... tom

I wish I could turn my Ray up all the way.....
But since I live in a neighborhood, surrounded by houses and people, I can't. At least not until these bars we play expand a little.
So, TS808, and TS9 like a lot of other people have said. I have a hard time getting a sound I like out of my Timmy when using the Ray. It's there, but it seems elusive to my ears and once the gig is done and everything is packed, it goes away and you have to find it all over again the next time. I'm gonna get a Zendrive personally. Also, I really like my Analogman Sunface (I know, not exactly an OD) as long as you keep the 'Fuzz' control somewhere below 10-11 o'clock.

And even then the Wampler didn't sound nearly as good on the Ray as it does on my Mazerati v2. any OD pedal I use on the Mazerati sound great.

I've tried quite a few dirt pedals with my Stang Ray.
For my ears and in my humble opinion:
Of course the Zen Drive is great.
I found the Timmy to be an amazing pedal in itself but too flat in the mids for the Ray, which has a pretty scooped midrange.
I used a Crunch Box for a while but it has an accentuated lower mid emphasis, and when combined with the amazing low end of the Ray it sounded kind of woofy and artificial to me.
The best low gainer I've found so far is the Menatone Red Snapper. I really, really like that pedal with the Ray.
I replaced my Crunch Box with a Suhr Riot and I'm generally pleased with it. I'd really like to try a Wampler Pinnacle for those tones though to see if it does a better job.

To the post on if the Ray is as pedal friendly as the Z28, In my experience, YES! I think it totally has to do with the EF86 front end. Love it.
With my ray, I loved my Red Snapper and Blue Collar.

I'll bet a Timmy would be a good fit and it stacks nicely with other pedals.
