I just bought my first dr z amp. I got a strangray and z best cab. Does anybody have any recomendations for overdrive/distortion pedals to use with this amp. I am looking for a good blues to classic rock tone. I have been looking at some of the fulltone pedals like the gt-500 and fd2. Any advice would be great. Thanks

YMMV, but something like the Clark Gainster or the MI Audio Blues Pro are great ODs for that mid '70s Bad Company kind of tone. But there are a MILLION great ODs. Robin Trower records with the FDII and tours with an OCD, so it's hard to go wrong with Fulltone. I was not a fan of the GT500 though, myself.

Thanks I've been using a Barber small fry (burn unit) lately. The Ray is a 'smooth' amp, and the Barber just extends the smoothness in a wonderful way...just adds transparent gain & sustain. You CAN dial in some grit if you want, there are 4 external and 4 internal knobs to tweak.

I've used the Barber Burn unit, MI Audio Crunch Box, BB Preamp, and lately the Zen Drive. All of them sound excellent through the 'ray.

I would think a Keeley BD2 would be nice.

I would think a Keeley BD2 would be nice. Shoot, ya beat me to it bud. I just got a Keeley BD-2 and it sounds great with the Ray. Especially with the extended low end that the mod gives that pedal, it blends into the Ray's circuit quite nicely. Others that I like are a Analogman KoT and a Zendrive. I really wanna try a Barber Small Fry, heard nothing but good things about it.

The one thing I've consistently found about the Stingray, is that it either loves a pedal, or it hates it. There is no middle ground. Now when it's a good match, it's a beautiful thing. Probably has something to do with the EF86 front end. I've had good luck with both the Keeley BD2 & TS9+, Fulldrive 2 (love/hate thing with me, bought and sold 2). Currently using the BYOC Screamer, and the Barber LTD SR, for dirt pedals, fronted by the Flying Dragon Boost pedal. Those always put a smile on my face.

Before you guys laugh at my suggestion, give it a try first. I've got a Danelectro Daddy'o that really does a great job at classic rock tone. Mike Campbell uses one (or at least used to) and I know he doesn't use it just because it's cheap. The good news is that you can pick one up on ebay for next to nothing and if you don't like it for whatever reason you're not out much. The bad news is it's not tru bypass, but I don't notice much tone sucking with George L cables and most of my other pedals are tru bypass. YMMV

I have a Zendrive and a BB preamp, and I love those pedals. I also have a TS9 Tubescreamer. But the Ray and the TS9 sound like they were designed for each other.

I've ran a TS10, TS9, Keeley TS9, Visual Sound Rt66 (ts808 clone) and a BB preamp all through my Ray and they all sound GREAT!!
If it came down to just one, it'd be hard for me to choose between the Keeley Mod Plus TS9 and the BB preamp.... They're my two favorite.

TS9 never sounded better than through the 'Ray. My FD2 sounds good too.
Buying a Stang makes finding *the* OD much harder because so many pedals sound so good through it!
Hook up a little Line 6 POD and try it yourself-- you won't believe it.

BB, RC, ZenDrive, TS9, Jekyll and Hyde, Sparkle Drive, Lovepedal, OCD, one thing about the Ray, it has really taken any pedal I have thrown at it very well. It makes it hard to thin out the pedal board. It is a pedal monster. It becomes a matter of taste and music/playing style. The Ray takes them all IMHO.

Forget the pedal, dude. Just crank up the Stang Ray and let it rip. Yes, I know this is a loud amp but it's a good loud. Work the volume control on your guitar to clean it up. Heck, until I got my Stang Ray I thought them thar knobbies on that geetar was there just for looks. Seriously...It may take a little time to find that "sweet spot" volume but it will be well worth it. I used to use all the boutique OD pedals, Fulltone, Barber, Ibanez 808, TS9, etc. etc. Now my rig is Guitar, cable, Stang ray. Trust me, you will like it.

"A good loud?" Tell that to the people on the audience and the bandmates who can't hear anything over you!
I love the cranked sound of the Ray, but I'll never play a room big enough to let it rip. I need pedals.

The Crunch Box is great for those absolute Marshall tones. I use it for the over the top stuff (AC/DC, etc) The OCD would work great, just traded a FD2Mosfet with a fellow Z Talk member for the BB Preamp. Like the BB so far. Definitely have my eyes on a KOT, Small Fry.....Had the GT 500, liked the boost side, not crazy about the distortion side though.
Start with a Crunch Box. Wont be disappointed. Huge Tone, Little Price!!

Any of you guys tried a Mojo-Drive or Chupacabra? I'm a fan of Ethan's pedals, and am DEFINITELY gonna have a Ray some day, for sure! These pedals kill through my Maz Jr.

I favor the OCD but also use a BB and an AC sometimes stacked with an RC. Each OD has a little different flavor all work great with the ray.

Best overdrive sound for the 'Ray is a good cable, LO input and the volume maxed. But in the real world, ZVex Box of Rock gets me very close at reasonable volumes. Didnt like my FD2 with it....fine for solos, but not quite cutting it on rhythm work.

So my birthday wrapped up about an hour ago and I have some extra cash. I'm still trying to find that perfect OD sound with my Ray. For more crunchy stuff, the BB does really well. What I really want though is a pedal to add just a tiny bit of grit around the gorgeous clean sound. I don't want much at all, just some hair. This would be more for rhythm work than anything. I'm getting a great lead tone with the BB. Any thoughts. I've got an RC booster, but it's mainly my solo boost. I'm thinking that might be ok. Now I'm just rambling. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions in advance.
PS, here's a list of things I've tried... AC BB Keeley BD-2 FD2

I'm using the OCD for heavier distortion and the RC Booster for just a little drive. Both sound great. I also have a Blues Driver that I'm going to send to Keeley for the mod.

It has an absolutely gorgeous clean boost and you can also dial in some mild-to-wild grit. It's about $200 and you can probably find one on eBay if nobody local carries Z-Vex stuff.

The FD2 Mosfet really did it for me. There are many great pedals but it depends on what you hear in your head. I also have a Jetter Gain Stage Red but haven't tried it in a Stang. Good luck!!

Lovepedal Kalamazoo is next on my list. Although a Z. Vex Box of Rock might also fit the bill for you...

I used to own the zvex sho, however I thought it was a great pedal. It just seemed a little noisy to me though.
